  • Polygyny is a word that comes from two Greek words - "poly" - which means "many" and "gynia" - which means "wife". That is, polygyny is just polygamy, that is, it is a form of marriage in which a man has several wives.

IN modern world many cultures and religions not only welcome, but also encourage polygamy. For example, the President of South Africa Jacob Zuma currently has 5 wives, but the leading position here is occupied by the king of a state such as Swaziland, Mswati III has 13 wives. But his predecessor Sobhuza II had as many as 70 wives. And this is far from the limit.

Polygyny can be divided into 2 types. The first type is sororal polygamy. Moreover, all the wives of one man are sisters. But the second type of polygyny is called non-sororal. Moreover, all the wives of one man are not related to each other.

In Russia, polygamy has never been welcomed. However, until 1922, there was no article in the criminal code of the RSFSR that would provide for punishment for having more than one wife. Beginning in 1922, such an article nevertheless appeared and it was numbered 199. According to it, for having more than one wife, a man was sentenced to forced labor for one year or a fine of up to a thousand rubles. However, this law did not apply to those who lived with several wives before the year the law was passed.

It was legally simply impossible to become a polygamist in the USSR, because without a divorce stamp, no one would enter into a new marriage anywhere. However, here too there were sometimes exceptions - men who still officially had 2 families.

Today in Russia there is no punishment for bigamy. And bigamy itself does not officially exist either, but in republics such as Ichkeria and Ingushetia, polygamy is the most common thing. However, polygamy was soon banned in Ingushetia, but in Ichkeria it still exists to this day.

Several times the presidents of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan wanted to introduce polygamy in their republics. But they were not allowed to do this by the Russian President.

Polygamy can be treated differently. For some, this is a way to get married, because “there are few princes and there aren’t enough for them all.” For some, this is something unacceptable, because in this case, women will have to share one man among all. And someone even regards this with some dreams and still hums to themselves “if I were a sultan, I would have three wives...”.

I would have had it, but all these wives need to be fed. And raise as human beings those children who will be born in these marriages. So for some, polygamy is a matter of course, while the Sultan is truly able to support his wives. And in another case, a poor peasant in some village N does not even dream of having another wife in his family...

So polygamy, of course, apart from religious rules, is most likely just another whim of rich people who, again, have nowhere to put their money. But again, why formalize so many marriages when you can easily have several mistresses? Although three mistresses are still a little different than three wives.

    Excerpt characterizing Polygyny

On October 28, Kutuzov and his army crossed to the left bank of the Danube and stopped for the first time, putting the Danube between themselves and the main forces of the French. On the 30th he attacked Mortier’s division located on the left bank of the Danube and defeated it. In this case, trophies were taken for the first time: a banner, guns and two enemy generals. For the first time after a two-week retreat, the Russian troops stopped and, after a struggle, not only held the battlefield, but drove out the French. Despite the fact that the troops were stripped, exhausted, weakened by one third, backward, wounded, killed and sick; despite the fact that the sick and wounded were left on the other side of the Danube with a letter from Kutuzov, entrusting them to the philanthropy of the enemy; despite the fact that the large hospitals and houses in Krems, converted into infirmaries, could no longer accommodate all the sick and wounded, despite all this, the stop at Krems and the victory over Mortier significantly raised the morale of the troops. Throughout the entire army and in the main quarters, the most joyful, although unfair, rumors were circulating about the imaginary approach of columns from Russia, about some kind of victory won by the Austrians, and about the retreat of the frightened Bonaparte.
