Finger trap

Master class on making Chinese finger traps. You will learn how to make fun of your friends.

Asia is famous for its puzzles and unusual games. Back in ancient times, a form of entertainment called the “finger trap” appeared in China. Its essence is simple: a person inserts his index fingers into a braided tube, and then cannot remove them. And the more effort the victim puts in, the tighter the trap tightens, and only the manufacturer of this “toy” knows the secret through which he can free himself.

The method for making finger traps is not too complicated. In the old days in China, they used bamboo bark for this; the trap was very durable, and the grip was the strongest. Today you can make such a puzzle toy from plain paper. Chinese finger traps are inexpensive, but the handmade version is much more interesting, and it can be made in a variety of colors.

At the first stage of production, you will only need paper of two colors (it will be more convenient to make and it will look more interesting), scissors and ordinary glue. DIY finger traps are made from four thin strips of paper, two of each color. You need to cut strips 12 millimeters thick along the entire length of an A4 sheet.

Special precision is not required here, but still try to cut the strips carefully. Of the four strips, you need to glue two corners: glue a strip of the second color to a strip of one color at an angle of 90 degrees. Do not apply too much glue so that the paper does not get wet. This is the first step in how to make a finger trap.

For the second stage of work, you will need any cylindrical object that you can find in the house. To determine the length, simply bring your two index fingers together with their tips facing each other. Your cylinder should be the same length or a little longer, but not smaller. If you are making a trap as a gift for a small child, take this into account in the size of the cylinder.

The Chinese finger trap is completely safe, especially in a simple paper version, so don’t be afraid to give this thing to children of any age. The thickness of the cylinder is one and a half centimeters or the diameter of a finger. The body of a thick marker will do just fine. Take small pieces of isolette and loop them. The end result is a small cylinder, sticky on all sides. They need to be glued to your paper corners on the back side.

The third stage of how to make a finger trap is assembly. Glue the blanks to the cylinder from one edge, but from different sides along the diameter. The corners should be slightly outward. Now the hardest part is the weaving. Proceed in the following sequence. If the Chinese finger trap is made in red and yellow, then the weaving will be like this: on one side, pass the red ribbon under the yellow one from below and press it with your finger, do the same on the other side, then turn the cylinder again. Then pass the yellow ribbon underneath the red one, clamp it and turn it again.

So alternate colors until all the paper is woven. Gradually tighten the weave by moving it upward. In the end, you just need to glue all the paper ribbons to each other one by one. Cut off the free ends, take out the electrical tape, and shake the cylinder out. Your DIY finger trap is complete and ready to use.

The trap will work if you weave the ribbons correctly. The essence of the puzzle is very simple: it is simply impossible to remove your fingers with sharp jerks. To free yourself from the trap, you need to hold a certain strip of paper on each side and carefully pull out your fingers one at a time. This effect is based on simple physical laws, but can surprise anyone.

Our world is full of interesting things, even a small trifle can become a whole treasure for some person. Every day on our planet something new and exciting is invented, put into production, and then makes the whole world happy. We know that many interesting things and puzzles are being created today, and we will tell you about one of them today. The Chinese finger trap is a small thing, but how nice it is to experience new feelings and try to outwit the simple thing.

What is a finger trap made of at home?

This is a very simple craft, despite all its mystery. We just need a little time and a sheet of paper from which we will cut out the strips we need. If you don’t have large paper, you can use ribbon to decorate gifts, but not too wide.

How to make a finger trap with your own hands?

Well, let's get started with the craft. It is not heavy, so even schoolchildren can handle it.

1. We prepare four pieces of paper or tape, 1 cm wide and arm's length long.

2. We take two tapes and fasten their ends together not evenly, at an angle of 80 degrees. We do the same with the other two pieces.

3. Now we should take a small round stick, the diameter of a finger. We attach our tape to the cylinder. Glue one glued end of the two tapes to the cylinder. The second to the back of the cylinder, symmetrically to the first.

4. We begin to twist the cylinder. We wrap one strip, then stretch the second one behind it, and so on until the tape runs out. This is what we got. If the weaving is not correct, the trap will not work!

5. The end of the tape should also be fastened together.

6. We take out the cylinder and our trap is ready!

How to use the trap?

Using such a trap is very simple - stick the index finger of your left hand on one side, and your right hand on the other. Then try to pull it out, it’s unlikely that you will succeed, because that’s why it’s a trap.

An interesting puzzle for those who like to rack their brains. This amusing toy has a little secret that is easy for an adult to figure out, but a child is unlikely to find a solution to this problem immediately and independently. If you want to make a surprise for someone, watch the video tutorial: how to make a finger trap. In China, these traps were woven from bamboo, so it was almost impossible for a person who fell for it to pull out his fingers without knowing the secret. This video tutorial offers a simple paper version.

To make this Chinese entertaining toy, you will need two strips of paper, glue and a marker, or another tube-shaped object.

Homemade Chinese finger trap

The Chinese finger trap is a typical joke. You give it to your friend and ask them to stick their fingers into both ends of the device. As they extend outward, the cylinder narrows, making it almost impossible for the victim to escape. The finger trap was originally made from bamboo, but in this tutorial I will show you how to make one from paper. This is very easy to do by simply weaving strips of paper around the cylinder. It takes about 10 minutes to do this in the easiest way and works very well.

Step 2: Make a Cylinder

If you already have a dowel, handle, or something the same size as your finger, you can skip this step. To make your top hat, simply roll up a piece of scrap paper and use tape to keep it from unraveling. The cylinder should be slightly smaller than the width of your finger.

Step 3: Prepare Your Strips

Now you need to cut out four strips of paper, preferably two of each color. Cut your strips from the long side of the A4 piece. The width of your strips depends on the width of your finger. I used 1.5cm wide strips but my fingers are quite thin. You can always experiment. Once you cut the strips, you will need to use Blu-Tack to glue them perpendicularly at one end so that you end up with two right angles like in the picture. You need to have two identical right angles with the same color on the top. After this, use Blu-Tack again to glue the two right angles to the top of the cylinder. therefore they are opposite. Again, just like in the picture.

Step 4: Weaving

Here you need to start weaving the strips around each other around the cylinder. This can be done by taking one stripe going in one direction and placing it under a stripe of a different color and then on top of a second stripe of a different color. Repeat this with all the strips until you are almost out of paper. This can help as you weave to ensure all the strips fit snugly around the cylinder.

Step 5: Tigering

Use Blu-Tack again to glue the strips together at the end as you did at the beginning. Then remove the Blu-Tack at the top while holding the strips in the cylinder and remove the finger trap from the cylinder. Now for each endpoint separately, remove the Blu-Tack and pull the strips tightly, then replace the Blu-Tack. Check the width by sticking one of your fingers into it, if you can't get it in you may need to loosen it.

Step 6: Glue the ends

Now that you are happy with your finger trap, you can remove the Blu-Tack and tape the ends together. Remove any excess paper and you're done! Now go and prank your friend. Since the trap is made of paper, it may break if your friend is too rough, but it doesn't matter because you can always make a new one.

Step 7: More Stripes

If you want to make a more fancy finger trap, you can make it using more strips. I originally used 4 strips of each color. More stripes should be proportionally thinner. Don't just accept the width like I did. Measure them.

This Chinese paper strip finger trap toy is traditionally made from bamboo, but this fun toy can easily be made from a regular piece of paper. Place your finger in this beautiful paper tube and then try to pull it out. The harder you pull, the tighter the trap holds you! Famous people have played with this ancient toy! To free yourself, all you need is a little softness. Press it gently with your finger, and don't tug at the other end, and it will slide right out!

This paper strip toy is cheap and easy to make using materials and tools you already have. This makes it ideally easy to learn, like a DIY birthday gift. Place it in a bag of treats, or use it as a table decoration.
