The attractiveness of indoor plants depends not only on their own decorative value, but also on the container in which they grow. A pot that forms a single whole with green and flowering favorites can both emphasize their advantages and hide their shortcomings, and vice versa. If the container is incorrectly selected according to aesthetic parameters, even a luxurious orchid can be turned into a nondescript and neglected spectacle. Today the range of pots is more than large. But finding a container that is ideal for each plant is not easy, and not always possible: best models There are a lot of pots. But even the simplest or oldest containers can be transformed independently by fitting them into the interior and adding new accents that reveal the beauty of leaves or inflorescences.

Practicality isn't everything

Pots for indoor plants are selected, first of all, according to practical parameters: they must create ideal conditions for growth, match the size of the root system of the crops, provide a sufficient number of drainage holes for the free outflow of water. The range of containers for pets includes both plastic and ceramic pots. And in each category there are containers of different price groups and functionality, shapes and sizes. And when choosing the ratio of width and height, taking into account the growth pattern of the plant, the volume of the previous container, we often forget about another very important parameter of each flowerpot and pot - its aesthetics.

Boring and ordinary, unattractive and familiar pots that are just a container for growing and do not stand out in themselves - these are the majority of pots for indoor plants. Especially if they are used “by inheritance”, replanting new plants as they grow and repeatedly using one container for completely different crops. But they can and should be the main decoration of green pets.

Of course, there are fashionable bright flowerpots, original containers, elite models, each of which becomes part of the interior. But they all require individual selection and considerable costs. But those who have boring and standard pots should not neglect aesthetics. Even the most boring container can be turned into a decorative accent, made more suitable for a specific plant and a specific setting.

Additional decoration of flower pots is necessary in the following cases:

  • if the pots do not fit well with the decorative characteristics of the plants themselves;
  • when the containers are not elegant enough or, conversely, are too bright for the plants growing in them;
  • when using old, “worn out” pots;
  • for masking defects (for example, chips or stains) on the outside of the container;
  • if the pot does not fit well into a group with other plants or the interior as a whole (especially if its style or color does not match the decor);
  • to save money on purchasing luxury designer pots (with the same exclusivity effect);
  • as a great way to create a unique, individual decor;
  • to introduce stylish and cozy details into the furnishings of the rooms;
  • as well as for those who like to be creative and look for exclusive solutions even in small things.

Various ways of decorating containers for plants will help you transform ordinary pots into special ones. Some of them suggest recalling handmade skills, others - using improvised materials, and still others - even deciding on the most unexpected experiments. Sometimes to transform flower pots it is necessary to add one single detail, and sometimes it is better to completely hide the pot itself under the original “coat”. You just need to set aside a little time and not be afraid to show your imagination - and unique, “one-piece” pots for indoor plants will become a “highlight” in the design of your home.

Method 1. Double pots and external containers

The simplest and at the same time not the most practical option quickly disguise a nondescript, old pot, unsuitable for the plant in appearance, but very convenient and perfectly performing its functions - put it in another one. A double pot will help not only when you don’t like the main container, but also if:

  • beautiful expensive containers that you buy as a luxurious accent, it’s such a pity to “get dirty” and use them for their intended purpose (by planting the plant in a smaller pot and simply placing it in a more beautiful one, you will preserve both aesthetics and practicality, without adding to your troubles);
  • you choose ceramic containers for purely decorative characteristics; they do not have drain holes at all, or there is only one and it is so small that there is no question of any optimal water drainage.

At the same time, not only flower pots can be used as an external container. The function of an external container can be easily performed:

  • old kitchen items or decorative containers - from pots and teapots to clay bowls or porcelain pots;
  • decorative interior boxes and baskets for needlework;
  • unusual containers of garden and kitchen utensils - watering cans, pots, buckets and vases;
  • caps, hats and even boots.

The main thing is to choose an external container so that it fits perfectly into your interior and reveals the beauty of the plants themselves. And putting a plant planted in a simple flowerpot into it is a matter of a few seconds.

Method 2. Magic painting

The easiest way to change absolutely any container (or any piece of furniture or utensil) is to paint it. And for this you can use both ordinary and cheapest enamels, and artistic paints from acrylic to oil. New color and the flawless finish can be made glossy or matte, multi-colored, with a gradient effect or striped, bright or more pastel. They select a color to match the interior (as a rule, to match the accent colors or the dominant color scheme). If you want, you can even paint landscapes on the surface of the pots or create an intricate futuristic abstract painting. When it comes to painting, you are limited only by your imagination and skills.

From a practical point of view, painting is really simple. The main thing is to consider the material of the container itself and which paints are suitable for working with a particular surface. And don’t forget that you only need to work on the outside of the containers: there is no need to paint the inside. Before painting, the containers must be washed, if necessary, cleaned with sandpaper or sanding paper and degreased for perfect adhesion of the paint to the surface.

Method 3. Messages on the potty

It is not necessary to paint the pots completely. If desired, you can use them as a “slate” - for storage important information or funny quotes, messages, catchphrases, decorating the walls with inscriptions of different sizes and characters. For indoor plants that grow in the kitchen, you can write on the pots the ratio of product measures, a list of spices for your favorite meat, information about the proportion of ingredients, or even recipes. Inspirational messages are always appropriate in the bathroom, romantic quotes in the bedroom, multiplication tables and other educational trifles in the nursery, and motivational phrases in the study. Pots can also be an excellent basis for children's creativity.

You can make inscriptions with paint, a regular waterproof marker, and even wax pencils. If you don’t want to do the inscriptions by hand, you can always buy special stickers, decals, or print out your favorite quotes. Only non-waterproof materials should be varnished on top.

Method 4. 3D transformation

Today, options for completely covering the surface of a pot with new materials are not limited to painting. It is enough to buy reliable waterproof glue or a glue gun and select the material with which you want to cover the pot and diligently glue its surface.

You can decorate flower pots:

  • sisal;
  • beads;
  • shells;
  • decorative glass or pebbles;
  • buttons;
  • pasta or cereals;
  • small twigs, sticks or colored pencils;
  • nuts and cones;
  • sequins and rhinestones.

Such materials can simply “cover” the surface with a second layer or completely hide the contours, straighten the walls or create a new relief. But regardless of the specific effect, a completely covered container always looks more than original, original, unique and eclectic. Gluing looks especially good on medium-sized pots, and also if you hate throwing away containers with cracks or chips that have not lost their functionality.

Method 5. Ecotrends, or herbarium on flowerpots

Today, herbariums and natural decor are regaining their former glory. And as a basis for eco-decorations, you can use not only panels, photo frames and various interior items, but also flower pots. True, such painstaking and fragile decor is appropriate on pots only for those indoor plants that stand in the most prominent places or are used in table settings: the fine work needs to be admired.

Dried flowers, inflorescences, twigs, berries, leaves, fruits, pieces of bark and other natural decor are collected in small “bouquets” and attached to the surface of a pre-painted or simple pot using a glue gun, and then varnished for reliability. The decor should be minimalistic and small: this is not the most durable decoration option, it should not interfere with freely moving the pot and picking it up.

Method 6. Large or small volumetric decor

Unlike herbarium decor, three-dimensional appliqué made from more durable materials is much more practical and durable. Using glue or a glue gun, you can attach stones, pebbles, glass, starfish, shells, curls made of paper or miniature origami figures, flowers fashioned from ceramics, leaves, three-dimensional figures, making three-dimensional accents and decorations from them. The simplest option is to buy special materials for modeling (today you can buy them not in sets, but individually) and create a thin braided border or miniature flowers from the ceramic mass, which can be attached to a pot, giving it an expressive relief. You can even use salt dough figures.

Volumetric decor always looks better on pots made of natural materials - clay or terracotta - and does not go well with plastic.

Method 7. Decoupage in all its glory

One of the most fashionable types of decoration, the use of which goes far beyond just handicrafts, is decoupage. Using motifs cut out from napkins or decoupage cards, you can decorate any surface with painting. Thanks to simple imitation, patterns can bloom on flower pots, beautiful symbols or entire paintings can appear. And for gluing you only need skill and special glue and varnish. If you want to experiment, you can decorate the pot itself with the effects of artistic patina, craquelure, and cover it with unexpected metallic shades. Decoupage is especially good for nostalgic interiors, baroque, classicism, Mediterranean style and Provence, although such decoration can be used to give individuality to flower pots in other interior styles.

But decoupage only allows you to apply individual motifs to pots. If you want to completely cover the surface, you can use wallpaper, photo wallpaper, colored silk or chintz, any prints and ornaments printed on a color printer on rice paper or textured cardboard. They will not look like artistic painting, but will also give the containers original accents. True, glue and varnish for decoupage in this case are not enough: you will have to contact the construction department for materials.

Method 8. Clothes for pots

You've probably come across charming sets of “clothes” for teapots and teapots in souvenir shops and china shops, which turn even the simplest utensils into small masterpiece. There are similar “clothes” for flower pots. True, with them everything is simpler: just sew or knit a small muff according to the size of the pot, which will tightly hug the walls. Such “clothes” are either knitted or sewn from fabric. Patchwork, patchwork, luxurious chintz, cotton, brocade and other interior and upholstery fabrics to match the textiles in the room or various options hand knitted and crocheted - there are plenty to choose from.

Without disturbing the shape of the pot and making it visually more comfortable, you will introduce new textile accents into the room’s decor and at the same time a new atmosphere. This option is especially good for decorating flowerpots for the winter, as it adds a special seasonality to the home. And a nice bonus - protection of the substrate from hypothermia, cold air flows, cold surfaces and drafts - will certainly appeal to the most heat-loving green beauties.

Method 9. Thread to thread

Pasting, or wrapping with threads and cords, is an original technique, something intermediate between volumetric decoration and simply tying up flowerpots. Having lubricated the surface of the container for indoor plants with reliable, durable glue (for example, PVA), you can tightly wrap multi-colored thick threads, sisal, cords of different thicknesses or twine around it, creating a textured, very beautiful coating reminiscent of wicker baskets. Threads with a sheen or metallic coating, as well as decorative twine with metallic thread, are especially good. If desired, you can weave braids from threads, change the direction, combine several threads for a striped effect. This decoration method is suitable for both ordinary flowerpots and hanging baskets.

Method 10. Magic cords and ribbons

They are called magical not for their special talents, but for their amazing ease of use. Thanks to ribbons, decorative cords, twines and other “strings” tied to pots, you can change the appearance of a flowerpot in less than a minute and give it expressiveness and fashionable brightness. This method of decoration is perfect for those who do not have extra time (or the desire to engage in handmade and creative work). Just go to any fabric store and buy the cord, twine or ribbons of different widths that suit the style of your interior or the ones you like. By tying them on the pot, you will add graphics and interesting accents to it. If desired, you can always tie a tag with the name of the plant or a schedule of watering and fertilizing, a small keychain or pendant, tie bows or a combination different tapes for greater effectiveness.

Before you start working, you need to decide on the decoration technique, choose the color scheme and containers that you will decorate. You can decorate flower pots in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials from which they are made.

First of all, before decorating, you need to prepare the base of the dishes. To do this, it is cleaned of dirt, dust, stains, and if there are any decorative elements on it, they are removed. After this it needs to be dried. The basis for the design is ready, all that remains is to decide on the methodology.

Creating interesting design For a pot, it is not at all necessary to buy expensive decor; you can use what is in every home. However, when choosing a material for design, it is necessary to take into account the material from which the container is made.

Marine style

Every home has souvenirs brought from the sea, such as pebbles, shells and colorful pieces of glass, with which you can decorate containers for indoor plants. Also, sea souvenirs can be combined with a wide variety of small details, for example, with coins, buttons, fragments of broken dishes, or ceramic tiles.

Before starting work, you need to thoroughly rinse the flowerpot and degrease it, then use construction glue to fix shells, pebbles and other design details. Also, if desired, the pattern can be supplemented with a spectacular design applied with paints, or a mixture of cement mortar with PVA. The mixture should look like thick sour cream. The resulting mixture is applied to the pot with a brush, excess solution is removed with a napkin.

The main background can be created using acrylic paints. All shades of blue, light blue and turquoise are perfect for a marine style.

Sand perfectly emphasizes the sea direction. It is best to use sea or river sand. The design method looks like this: an adhesive mass is applied to the area outlined for the drawing, after which the pot is tilted and sprinkled with sand. The last stage of design is coating the surface with varnish, which will make the product more durable and give it a spectacular shine.

Textile design

A great idea for decorating flower pots is to decorate the pots with fabric. Pots made of ceramic or plastic are best suited for this design, because their surface will need to be sanded down for strength. After this, glue is applied to the entire surface of the pot and textiles are carefully wound from one edge along the entire length of the base. In this case, to avoid the formation of air bubbles, the fabric must be smoothed. Next, you need to make cuts in the shape of a triangle on both sides and finally secure the fabric.

Lace fabric. The most elegant option for decorating a container with flowers is to decorate it with lace. The work will also require glue, but in this case you will need to work more carefully, otherwise traces of glue will spoil the appearance. Lace can be used either as an independent element or in combination with other fabric. You can drape the entire pot with lace, or simply decorate its edges.

Sackcloth. will complement a beautiful pot decorated with burlap. The design technique is similar to using any other fabric, but for greater effect, such a flowerpot can be supplemented with bright buttons and artificial flowers.

Decorating with pieces of eggshell

A fairly simple way to decorate a flowerpot is to decorate it with pieces eggshells. First, the base is prepared; for this purpose, the exact place of the pot where the shell will be fixed is covered with glue. It is also necessary to prepare the shell; for this, the film is removed from it, the pieces are washed, dried and degreased.

Then the fragments are glued with the convex part outward. It is important to take into account that the pieces must be fixed tightly, but carefully, otherwise loosely fastened fragments may fall off or break if pressed hard. You can adjust the pattern with a toothpick.

Decoupage

The original decor of flower pots, a master class of which can be easily found on the Internet, is decoupage. The technique of this decoration is based on the use of paper pictures, colored paper, and napkins. This method is suitable for pots made of clay or plastic.

At the first stage, the flowerpot is cleaned, degreased, and primed, then coated with paint. Next, the desired design is cut out of paper or a napkin and glued to the base of the pot, after which the design is complemented with other decorative elements and varnished.

Ropes and threads

The interior of a classic, business style will become more colorful if it is supplemented with flower pots decorated with threads or ropes. To do this, the container is lubricated with glue and tied with threads or ropes, and the threads should be located as tightly as possible among themselves. If desired, you can decorate the product with buttons, bows or beads.

Original design ideas

There are a lot of interesting unusual ideas decorating flower pots that will not require a lot of time and money. The most original of which are decorations with inscriptions and drawings or with the help of cereals. This technique can be performed together with your child.

Drawing and inscription. This bright option is suitable for pottery, ceramic or plastic containers. First step: use a brush to paint the entire surface, which must dry. Then the double-sided design is printed and cut out on photo paper. Then the drawing is glued. After everything has dried, you need to moisten the image with a sponge moistened with water. Now the paper is carefully rolled up so that only the design remains on the pot. After this, the flowerpot is dried and varnished.

Cereals. The prepared dishes are covered with glue, onto which a variety of cereals are attached. The flower pot will gain more original design, if with the help of cereals you depict on it a picture previously drawn on the product. When working with grains, it is best to use grains with flat edges, such as peas or lentils.

Decorating is a fun activity for the whole family. In order to create a real masterpiece with your own hands you will need glue, decorative elements, imagination and a good mood.

Flower pots. Decorating flower pots with your own hands

Some people buy expensive and richly decorated clay pots (sometimes they don’t fit into the overall design style of the room at all), others, without thinking, take simple plastic flower pots from the supermarket shelf, which are also not particularly beautiful.

How to inexpensively and beautifully make a pot into an exquisite decorative element??? For this, simple, untreated clay pots without decoration or painting will suit you. This has two advantages: they are inexpensive and ideal for indoor plants, while plastic containers for indoor flowers do not have the necessary porosity and, as a result, do not allow sufficient air to pass through to the root system.

First decide on color scheme, in which you want to decorate flower pots. It is advisable to make them, if different, then consistent in the same style.

You can decorate flower pots in a variety of ways. Almost any handicraft technique can be used here.

Clay pots can be painted with paint from a can, wrapped with coarse threads or braid, painted special paints or beautifully draped with fabric. You can also glue an applique or beautiful beads to the pot and open the composition with varnish; you can make a flowerpot out of fabric. With braid, embroidery, or simply sew buttons on top, felt hearts, and tie a ribbon in a bow.

A pot whose design resembles a flower growing in it looks beautiful. It is good when the color of the flowerpot matches the color of the leaves or inflorescences of the plant.

Custom decor
Using putty, colored paints and sanding paper, standard terracotta pots can quickly be turned into “antiques”. We suggest cheating time and not waiting for the patina to appear by itself, but “aging” the pots in advance with your own hands.

Another option for non-standard decor is painting at home. You will need unglazed clay pots, waterproof varnish and the same paint for the walls. Use mineral paints to paint clay pots, and acrylic paints for plastic ones. Apply them in a continuous layer on the surface of the vessel. You can use templates that are sold in flower shops. They are fixed on the pot and contrasting paint is applied with a brush. Using this simple technique, the most ordinary pots will look like bright spots and will greatly decorate your windowsill.

What to do if the old flower pot is still quite strong, but completely unsightly?

Fun stripes way. Decorating a flower pot with a strip of fabric, as in the photo above, is easy.

The only thing is to find a piece of dense, stiff fabric that matches the color, cut out a rectangle along the height of the pot (add 2-3 cm to the hem on all sides) and tuck the edges if they fall off. All that remains is to secure the fabric to the pot, gluing it along the top edge and sides, or you can pin the edges of the “clothes” with pins (or sew on Velcro) - then the cover will be easier to change or remove for washing.

First, you need to lay out the design you have chosen on paper. The next step is gluing the pieces of glass. First you need to glue the picture, and then the background.

Note. If you use hot glue, it will take you no more than 30 minutes to glue the pieces of glass. If you use PVA glue, this process will take several days, since you will need to glue the glass, gradually turning the pot, and wait for the glue to dry. After “hot glue” it is necessary to remove the cobwebs.

2. After the glass has dried, apply putty. It is necessary to thoroughly coat the entire pot. In this case, some pieces of glass may fall off - no big deal, glue them on when the putty has dried (after 24 hours).

3. After about 5 minutes, when the putty has dried a little, start washing it off the glass using a wet cloth. Then wait 24 hours until everything is completely dry. The putty may dry out a little during this time. Then you will have to apply another layer, then wash all the glass again and wait another 24 hours.

4. The last stage is the most enjoyable! You need to carefully coat the glass with varnish - and your mosaic will shine!

Let's get started decorating the flower pot
Cover the surface of the entire flower pot with the exception of the rim with white paint.
After the paint has dried, apply masking tape under the rim to protect the white surface from the blue spray. We paint the rim with blue spray paint, and after drying, remove the masking tape. If you replace the spray with regular paint, you will also need masking tape.
Cut out violets from a paper napkin. To make it more convenient, you can first outline them with felt-tip pens. Carefully separate the paint layer from the paper base
Carefully press each violet to the white part of the pot and carefully brush over its surface with a brush with acrylic varnish. After all the violets have dried, the entire surface of the pot will need to be coated again with acrylic varnish. Now our flower pot is not afraid of water, it can be washed without fear of damaging the picture.
We glue yellow rhinestones between the violets using universal glue.
Glue blue braid with hearts to the blue rim.
If desired and with a little imagination, you can create other drawings. It is important to choose matching colors.

For decoupage, you can use two-layer napkins with beautiful designs, and designs on plain or rice paper. In the latter case, the technique will be slightly different:

Place the paper drawing in water for a few minutes, transfer it to a paper towel and blot thoroughly;
Apply a small amount of glue to the surface and to the back of the design;
carefully transfer the drawing to the surface, press it with a sponge (to remove air bubbles);
cover the entire surface with varnish or decoupage glue.
Decoupage ceramic flower pot
1. buy a regular ceramic pot.
2. In an art store, beautiful napkins are sold individually, choose the one you like, but think in advance about what would match the background.
3. Acrylic paint is suitable for the background, although there are cases showing that it is possible to apply the background with regular gouache :)
4. Be sure to buy regular clear construction varnish. It is much cheaper than those offered in art stores, but the function is the same.
The background should be applied to the pot with a roller or a piece of foam, but not with a brush, otherwise there will be streaks from the brush when it all dries

5. Cut out the design from the napkin and separate the topmost layer. Usually a napkin consists of 4 layers, sometimes there are 2. We take the top one - with a pattern.

6. Apply paint to the pot - let it dry. It is advisable to leave it for several hours so that it dries completely. Then you definitely won't get it wrong.
Using regular PVA glue, carefully apply a thin layer gradually onto our napkin.

Attention! Do not do it on the entire napkin at once if the design is large. Otherwise, it may stick with wrinkles that you can’t smooth out without tearing! It is better to do it gradually, but carefully.
Once you apply the pad, let it dry and harden.
Apply a thin layer of varnish with a brush over the entire surface of the pot and napkin.

The attractiveness and unusualness of decorating a flower pot is limited only by your imagination!
