If knitted items have lost their original appearance, but you don’t want to part with them, you can decorate them with ornaments. Correctly selected embroidery on knitted fabric can bring your favorite things back to life. In this way, you can embroider and decorate not only adults’ clothes, but also children’s hats or scarves. Flowers or complex pictures - you can master all this by reading our article or watching the video.

Before you start working, It is worth paying attention to some rules for embroidery. They will ensure an easy process of creating patterns and a beautiful, neat appearance finished product.

  1. Inspect the product you are going to work with. Determine the thickness of the yarn that was used to knit this item. When embroidering with a thin thread, the design will turn out sloppy; it will not be able to hide the threads of the product. Embroidery with yarn that is too thick will look untidy. Therefore, choose a thread of the same thickness as the product, then the pattern will fit perfectly into the overall appearance of the item.
  2. While working, do not tighten the loops of the product itself too much, otherwise you will end up with a damaged, tight and shapeless item.
  3. Choose the right needles. They should be blunt-ended and not very thin, with a large ear. Such needles will easily pass through the product without clinging or delaminating its structure.
  4. Choose yarn for work based on the material of the product. For loop embroidery, choose threads of the same or similar composition. If you are going to embroider with satin stitch, choose threads with added viscose. And natural silk yarn is also perfect.
  5. If, when embroidering with satin stitch, the fabric of the product appears between the stitches, fill the gaps with iris threads. Such patterns look very unusual.
  6. To prepare the product for embroidery, it is recommended to moisten it with water and then let it dry. This technique will help align the loops and ensure the quality of the pattern.
  7. Buy only high-quality yarn, without knots or irregularities. The thread should be strong and uniform, not too twisted.

Following these simple but very useful tips, you will not experience problems when embroidering patterns and will enjoy the creation process.

Embroidering patterns on loops

This sewing makes it possible to add plain woolen items a touch of individuality. Having spent very little time, you will receive an exclusive item with embroidery self made completely suited to your tastes.

To embroider patterns along loops, take threads of the same thickness as the yarn of the knitted fabric, which will be the basis. Wet the product with water and dry it. This is done in order to align the loops. Select the design you want to transfer to the fabric. You can find ready-made diagram or draw it yourself. Loop patterns are embroidered in horizontal rows. After one row is completed, move on to the next one vertically. There are no special rules here; you can start embroidery from the top horizontal row, and then go down or vice versa, depending on your convenience. Large details are embroidered first, then small ones..

If you embroidered the first row from right to left, then the second will be embroidered from left to right, etc. Needlewomen who have long practiced sewing on loops recommend starting the pattern from the bottom row and moving up, because many people find this method more convenient.

To make it easier to understand the algorithm, we suggest you familiarize yourself with the step-by-step master class of embroidery on knitted fabric.

Pictures embroidered in this way look like knitted ones. This method is often used to decorate sweaters, because it is easier than knitting a complex pattern with knitting needles.

This funny owlet, embroidered with threads along the loops on knitwear, will decorate any children's sweater.

Satin stitching

Embroidery on knitted things can be done not only in loops, but also in other ways, for example, satin stitch. This type of embroidery is often used to decorate knitted napkins, tablecloths or hats.

  1. Select a sewing pattern.
  2. Translate it onto a piece of tracing paper.
  3. Along the contour of the design, sew the tracing paper to the fabric on which you are going to embroider, using loose stitches.
  4. Remove the tracing paper without unraveling the stitches.
  5. For embroidery, choose threads of the same thickness as the yarn from which the fabric is knitted, or a little thicker. For satin stitch embroidery, threads made of 100% silk, with the addition of viscose, and Iris are suitable. Embroidery with threads of the same composition as the fabric yarn will look good.
  6. You can start embroidering.

This type of embroidery will not seem difficult even to novice needlewomen; all the basic stitches are performed simply and are easy to master.

Rococo embroidery on knitted items

Such embroidery will undoubtedly decorate your products, refresh old things or give a festive look to tablecloths and napkins.

Rococo is based on a specific decorative seam, and the main technique is having wound- the needle is wrapped in thread, and the curls that come out ultimately create elegant patterns. Using this technique, floral designs are usually created - lush roses, daisies. To complete the picture, nodules, berries and leaves are often added to the flowers. In the picture above, you see step-by-step master class on creating a stitch stitch. Once you have mastered the embroidery, you can easily decorate your wool and knitwear items with rococo embroidery.

Satin stitch ornaments for decorating things

Using such simple, at first glance, ornaments, you can get gorgeous embroidery and completely renew women's sweater. Satin embroidery is quite easy, in this ornament there are only stitches of the same type. With their help you can get just such a clearing of flowers on your sweater.

It is one of the traditional means of decorating items of clothing. It allows you to create something unique and inimitable from a completely ordinary thing.

When working with knitwear, there are a few basic rules to remember:

  • the knitwear stretches along its entire length and stops stretching in the area of the design;
  • when fastening a stitch, there is a great danger of pulling the thread out of the fabric structure;
  • Each product is individual and requires correct selection design, style of application and color.

Embroidery on knitwear involves the use of lining material. It prevents the knitted fabric from pulling together and allows the stitches to lie more evenly. The threads need to have the same structure as those used to create the fabric.

You can embroider on knitwear using all the same techniques as with regular embroidery, but you should select the type of pattern creation with special care.

Embroidery patterns should be transferred to tracing paper. In loose or hand knitted fabrics, the design is transferred from tracing paper to the fabric using hand stitches along the contours of the flowers. If the knitwear is thick, this can be done on a machine. When all the contours have been transferred, the tracing paper needs to be removed. Drawings of great complexity can be transferred using a special canvas. This canvas dissolves in water, leaving embroidered patterns on the canvas.

Special embroidery on knitwear

The individuality of this particular embroidery lies in the unusual stitch that completely follows the contours of the loop. The needle and thread are inserted from the wrong side to the front side at the point where the loop begins, the stitch passes exactly along the side of the loop and goes to the wrong side. The thread on the second half is brought to the front knit loop. As a result, the patterns of such embroidery can be mistaken for knitted entirely.

As a result of such embroidery on loose knitwear, it will become more rigid. This should definitely be taken into account when creating a pattern; the item will not lie down or fall off as softly as in places without embroidery. In this case, strong tightening will tighten the fabric and may warp the product. Embroidery patterns should not occupy too large an area.

If the knitwear is machine-made, using soft threads and careful stretching, you can use relatively large embroidery patterns, the fabric will become only slightly thicker.

This type of embroidery on knitwear is convenient because you can use patterns for cross stitch and beadwork, patterns for weaving and knitting as a sketch.

The most popular types of embroidery on knitwear:

  • smooth surface;
  • decorative seams;
  • rococo.

Surface

Involves overlaying stitches on top of each other. The sketch, divided into color zones, is stitched one color at a time. The stitches are made in the same direction, but at different heights. If a flower is embroidered, the location of the stitches is from the center. The next color fills all the gaps of the previous one and softly blends into the jagged edges. This creates not just a pattern, but also bizarre combinations and play of colors. Satin stitch embroidery cannot do without a lining. When choosing a pattern, you should take into account that knitwear stretches, but an embroidered pattern does not. You should not give too much space for such embroidery; a flat, smooth place, a back, a shelf or a pocket is ideal for it.

It may seem complicated to the craftswoman at first, but by studying this technique in more detail, you can create excellent products.

Decorative seams

When making decorative seams, reinforcement of knitwear is not required. The seams occupy a small area and rarely pull the material together. Before embroidering, you can slightly stretch the knitwear, pin it and moisten it. The loop seam can go in any direction without disturbing the structure of the fabric or its appearance. Flower petals made from large loops look amazingly delicate. With such embroidery, the knitwear practically does not tighten, the number of stitches is minimal. A loose thread does not disturb the harmony of the knitted fabric.

Rococo embroidery

The most popular embroidery on knitwear, and the most common. Ideal for roses and other embroidered flowers. If the volumetric image disrupts the appearance of the knitwear somewhere, it is hidden under the lush patterns of threads.

To pierce the fabric, do not remove the needle completely; we wind the working thread around the tip of the needle. Holding the wound rings with your finger, we pull the needle and thread through. We lay out the resulting curl on the fabric and attach it with a needle. With such convex arches you can create any shapes and pictures, placing them at any angle.

To form a chaotic center of a large flower, it is necessary to wind more threads on the needle than the planned length of the stitch, then the resulting curl will stand above the canvas.

To get a rosette in rococo style, you need to apply twisted stitches in a circle. The beginning of each petal is at a certain distance from the center, and the end of the petal is under the beginning of the petal of the previous row. Depending on the splendor of the rose, from 3 to 9 petals are placed in one circle.

It is convenient to create miniature inflorescences, centers of leaves and petals from rococo curls.

Flowers in which the embroidery is done using a satin stitch look especially lush, but each stitch is made in the Rococo style.

Since a lot of attention is paid to each stitch and everything is held by hand, it is easy to control the tension of the pattern while embroidering the pattern.

Rococo involves soft laying of lush stitches, so knitwear is rarely distorted by such embroidery.

Hook embroidery

Embroidery on the prepared canvas can be done as a separate item. When crocheting a product, special holes are left. After finishing the knitting, we get a blank for embroidering a specific pattern. Most often, such patterns are geometric; they do not tighten the knitwear and do not disrupt its appearance. The pattern of the planned embroidery and the corresponding base should be determined before knitting begins.

In this case, for knitting the base, you can use threads 1-2 numbers smaller than for embroidery, this will allow you to create a pattern even using simple straight stitches.

In the cold season, we all put on sweaters, pull on hats and mittens. Plain things are practical, but quickly get boring. Let's decorate ordinary sweaters, mittens and hats by doing embroidery on knitted clothes. This is not at all difficult, but it looks impressive, allowing you to create unique things for adults and children.

Features of embroidery on knitted products

For knitted items, loop embroidery is mainly used, but there are other embroidery techniques. How to do embroidery on a knitted product? To get started, please be patient and have the following materials:

  • embroidery fabric;
  • threads;
  • needle for knitwear;
  • beads;
  • Luneville hook;
  • tracing paper;
  • scissors;
  • scheme.

Use any fabric as a canvas knitted item. Choose threads of the same thickness as the threads on the knitted product; in color they should be in harmony with it or be contrasting - it depends on the pattern.

A needle for knitwear can be replaced with a regular needle, dulling its tip about grindstone or sandpaper. Beads can be taken in different colors and sizes. You can even buy a “kit” for bead embroidery and use the included diagram to work with.

It is convenient to make beads on knitted items using the appropriate hook. Tracing paper will be needed to transfer the pattern for satin stitch embroidery. Scissors are for cutting out this pattern from carbon paper, and they are indispensable when working with threads. Any pattern is suitable - a contour pattern, as for coloring, if you want satin stitch embroidery, or a pattern for “cross stitch.”

If you embroider along loops:

  1. Decide on a picture and an item.
  2. One cell in the cross stitch pattern corresponds to one “tick” on a knitted product.
  3. Bring the needle and thread to the front side in the place where the knitted “tick” forks.
  4. We stick the needle at the top of one half of the tick, bring it back at the top of the second half, pull the thread - and here is the first stitch.
  5. We stick the needle into the point from which the needle was first brought out to the front side. The check mark is sewn, the first cell of the drawing is ready.
  6. Continuing in the same spirit, we complete the entire intended picture.

If you embroider with satin stitch:

  1. Transfer your picture onto tracing paper and trim off any excess edges.
  2. Fasten the tracing paper to the knitted fabric by stitching with thread all the contours drawn on the tracing paper.
  3. Carefully remove the tracing paper.
  4. Embroider the details of the design using the satin stitch technique that is comfortable for you, taking into account the nature of the design.

If you sew with beads:

  1. Take strong threads that match the color of the main item.
  2. For embroidery on a knitted product, use a Luneville hook - this way you will not fray the warp threads.
  3. It is better to attach beads to the fabric using a chain or stem stitch - this will ensure their reliable fixation and simplify the care of the embroidered product.

In any embroidery, make sure that the thread is evenly tensioned, otherwise the design will come out skewed.
The theory is over, let's move on to practice.

Pros and cons of embroidery on knitted items

Embroidery on a knitted product will turn any nondescript thing into a real work of art and give new life old, boring things. Using different techniques, techniques, stitches and seams, you can create any ornament or full-fledged design. Using beads, beads, buttons or sequins with rhinestones, you can decorate clothes even without patterns, which is simple, convenient and even a beginner can do.

The disadvantages include: that sometimes the threads with which the ornament is embroidered become dyed if washed incorrectly, and poorly secured beads and beads can come off, unraveling the entire ornament.

Write in the comments how you feel about embroidery on knitted items?

If you want to refresh your wardrobe at minimal cost, just make changes to old things. Embroidery on a knitted blouse will not only decorate it, but also make it original. In addition to clothing, embroidery is often used to decorate interior accessories that will perfectly enliven a room.

Advice! The pattern is chosen carefully so that it matches the model and style of the product.

Decorating knitwear with embroidery with woolen threads

You can embroider a pattern on any knitwear item. You should choose the same threads as those from which the fabric is knitted. They can be thinner, but not thicker than the main ones. For ease of drawing use dublirin or lining in this place from the wrong side.

You can replace them with a special canvas, which will prevent shrinkage and help apply the pattern more evenly; it will dissolve after washing.
The needles used are thick and blunt so as not to damage the fabric. Ribbons, beads or sequins are often added to embroidery with wool threads.

Important! Knitted fabric stretches well, but after embroidery it loses this property.

Three-dimensional patterns with woolen threads can be used on mittens, socks, blouses and children's clothes. There are many ornaments and various patterns for decorating knitted items. Volumetric embroidery with woolen threads on knitting is an excellent stylish decor.

Stitches for beginners

Before starting work, beginners should try their hand at a fabric sample.

Hand stitches for embroidering with woolen threads are based on basic stitches familiar from school:

  • “forward needle”;
  • “back the needle”;
  • tambour.

Single color

They are modernized and given special stitches suitable for embroidery on knitwear:

Looped (knitted). Repeats the pattern of the fabric and lies flat. Suitable for fabrics with large knitting. The finished work looks as if the pattern was knitted.

Loop stitch

"Stalked". Based on the “back needle” stitch, only the needle is brought out in the center and above the previous stitch.

"Daisy". Based on the tambour principle, but they are used not to embroider chains, but petals secured with a stitch in the center of the loop.

Daisy stitch.

Smooth surface. It is based on a “forward needle” seam. Suitable for embroidering large elements.

Seams of two or three colors

Usually these are simple stitches using wool with the addition of one or two threads of different colors. The most commonly used options are:

"Wave". Lay a series of “back needle” stitches and braid them with one thread of a different color, forming a cross loop on top.

Twisted seam.
Sew the stitch “forward needle” and also braid it with a second thread, but tighten it tighter and do not intertwine the loop crosswise. By adding another braiding thread, on the other hand, you get a three-color seam.

"Goat." Two or more seams mirrored over each other in different colors.

Straight vertical stitches weave together from above and below, forming loops that pull them together.

Chain stitch often performed in several colors, in two options: alternating loops; braided with an overlock hand stitch on one or both sides.

Chain stitch.

There are countless colored stitches. There are no clear rules in their creation, so using their imagination, craftswomen come up with their own options.

Advice! To make the loops of the fabric even and not stretched, the material is wetted with water and dried, and then work begins.

Types of complex Rococo seams

This technique is based on thread winding. Used to add volume to a drawing. Three seam options that should be studied before work:

Knot. Bring the fastened thread from the inside out onto the face. Wrap the end of the needle three times with thread and pull it through the turns. Next to the previous puncture, holding the coil, insert and pull the needle to the wrong side.

Knot in rococo seams.

Petal. Do everything the same as in a knot, but wind 10 - 12 turns. Insert the needle at a distance the size of the petal and pull it to the wrong side.

Petal embroidery in "rococo".

Berry. Fasten the thread and bring it to the front side. Pierce the fabric at a distance of the height of the berry, and the second puncture in the place where the thread was pulled out. Without pulling the needle through, pull the thread out of the eye and wind it around the ends of the needle. Wind the last turn with a figure eight.

Embroidery stitch “berry” in “rococo”.

Insert the thread back, holding the threads with your finger, secure with a small stitch at the top and bottom.

Important! To create rococo stitches, it is better to use threads that are not very twisted, otherwise they will get tangled.

Satin embroidery

This type of embroidery is considered classic. Suitable for any type of fabric, and due to the manufacturing technique it looks beautiful and natural.

You shouldn’t make a design that takes up too much space; just select a small, flat area on the shelf, back or pocket.

Work order:

  1. Select and transfer the drawing onto tracing paper.
  2. Sew tracing paper to the product, using loose stitches, along the contour of the design.
  3. Remove the tracing paper so that the stitches remain in place.
  4. When embroidering flowers, start from the center. To create smooth color transitions, the stitches of the next row are placed in the voids of the previous one.
  5. The stems are embroidered with backstitch, stem or chain stitches.

This type of embroidery uses simple stitches, so even a beginner can easily do it.

Knitted fabrics are similar in structure to canvas, but instead of cells you can use loops as your guide. Therefore, it will be convenient to cross-stitch on knitted items. You just need to transfer the diagram to the product.

Experienced needlewomen combine in one work various techniques. This adds originality to the pattern.

Decorate this way knitted dresses, sweaters, bags, and pillows, napkins and tablecloths made of knitwear with embroidery with woolen threads also look interesting.

The knitted product was placed in a hoop, the design was embroidered and a little upset. The result does not meet our expectations. What is the reason? Why does one design embroider without problems, while another refuses to yield?
Let's try to figure out what will help us make embroidery beautiful and neat.

CONTRACTING

There are many reasons why material shrinks. I tried to highlight the main ones, in my opinion, the most important. I dare to suggest that by dealing with the problems described below, you will practically rid yourself of unsuccessful embroidery on knitwear.
The main “enemy” when embroidering can be considered an overly dense design. Pay attention to the picture on the right. You see embroidery patterns with different densities. The smaller the distance between the lines, the greater the density. How to deal with this? If you are creating a design from scratch, reduce the density of the objects you create. If you are embroidering a finished design, then to “defuse” the embroidery, load it into the machine and slightly resize it up without counting the stitches. Changing the size of finished designs in embroidery machines occurs by increasing the stitch length and the distance between rows.
I would like to note that “every coin has two sides,” and when embroidering loose designs, you may encounter the problem of the knitted base showing through the loose stitch filling. To eliminate translucency, you can use organza. When using organza as a top stabilizer, you will get rid of the unwanted translucent effect. In addition, you will also save yourself from the problem of stitches falling through, which we will talk about later in this article.
The second reason for tightening may be the elasticity of the material itself, which is compensated by preliminary stitching (underlay), rigidly fixing the material to the stabilizer. If such stitching is absent in the design, then when embroidering there is a high probability of getting the embroidery pulled together and “slipped.”
As important as pre-stitching is, it may not always be present. For example, in very small objects, the presence of a bottom stitch is often not necessary. And in large objects of complex shape with filling (tatami), its presence is simply necessary. It is highly advisable to do preliminary laying in satin rollers. The satin stitch strongly tightens the material, and if you do not stabilize the material, problems may arise when embroidering.
The choice of stabilizer is an important stage in creating a project. There are not so many types of stabilizers and each has its own purpose, so I advise you to spend a little time studying the basic properties of stabilizers. Detailed information You will find information about stabilizers on our website and in previous Broidery.Ru magazines
When embroidering on knitwear, I usually use a tear-away stabilizer. Often one layer is enough, but there are situations when, to give additional rigidity to the material, it is necessary to use a stabilizer in two or less often in three layers. In addition, there are tear-off stabilizers of varying densities.
Typically, the stabilizer is located on the wrong side of the fabric and serves to strengthen the material, however, in some cases, the stabilizer is also used on the front side, but we will talk about this later.
When choosing the color of the stabilizer, you should be guided by the color of the fabric. If the knitted fabric is thick enough, then you can use either graphite or white stabilizer.

"FALLING" STITCHES

When embroidering on knitwear, you may encounter the problem of stitches falling through. The fact is that the knitted material is quite loose and some stitches, getting lost in the structure of the fabric, can disrupt the integrity of the embroidery. This is exactly the case when you need to use the upper stabilizer. I advise you to carefully consider his choice. Typically, it is a thin, water-soluble stabilizer. However, you can also use heat-soluble and dense water-soluble.
This type of stabilizer does not need to be hooped. Place it on top of the material prepared for embroidery, and hold it lightly with your fingers while embroidering, avoiding the stabilizer moving and getting your fingers under the needle.
To create an additional decorative effect and eliminate stitches from falling through, it is very useful to use organza as an upper stabilizer. Choose organza to match the color of the main material or simply trust your color sensations, since it is impossible to give clear recommendations in this case.
