DIY snowflakes: a New Year's miracle made from satin ribbons

Continuing preparations for the New Year (and it’s just around the corner), I want to invite you to create such wonderful New Year’s snowflakes with your own hands! They can decorate not only the Christmas tree, but windows or mirrors, or they can simply be placed on the holiday table as a decoration!

To create snowflakes using the Kanzashi technique, prepare:

-Satin ribbon 2.5 cm wide

-Needle and thread

-Beads, beads

-Scissors

-Tweezers (you can do without it)

-Glue (hot glue or Moment Crystal)

-Candle (you can take a lighter)

Snowflakes made from ribbons can be either simple or assembled on a frame.

In this master class we will take a closer look at simple snowflakes.

We collect narrow and round Kanzashi petals from a 2.5 cm wide ribbon.

Our snowflake must have a middle, so first we collect the round petals into a flower using a thread.

Cover the back side of the flower with a circle of tape.

Then we glue a round piece of paper between them.

We assemble the second row of modules only from sharp leaves. As a result, we get these modules and a flower in the center of the future snowflake.

Let's start assembling the snowflake. We assemble the first row of modules. Apply glue to the tip of the module:

And with this tip we glue it to the central flower.

So we glue all 6 modules to each petal of the central flower:

Using the same principle, we glue the second row of modules, consisting only of narrow Kanzashi petals.

Decorate the middle of the snowflake with a bead. You can add beads or beads to the tips of the branches.

Such a snowflake is called simple because the principle of its assembly is quite simple and understandable. Knowing how round and narrow Kanzashi petals are made, you can easily assemble other versions of voluminous snowflakes with your own hands from satin ribbons.

I wish you creative success! See you again!

But in this article we will talk about New Year’s crafts made from satin ribbons. Crafts can be simple or made using a special Japanese technique - kanzashi.

It’s okay, you can decorate your apartment with a miniature Christmas tree, which can be made from satin ribbons.

Outside the window the snow sparkles, shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow, snowflakes are falling from the sky, it seems that Santa Claus himself is about to come. And on New Year’s Eve, he always comes to the children for matinees and holidays, for street celebrations and for theatrical performances. You should definitely prepare for a matinee or school holiday, buy a new dress, choose a hairstyle, and choose exquisite winter accessories.

A snowflake made of ribbons made using the kanzashi technique, which can rightfully be called a winter flower, can be a wonderful hair decoration. Firstly, it is made of the thinnest satin ribbons, modeled from specially shaped petals, and secondly, it really looks like a snowflake due to the fittings and shape matching the color. You can easily make a couple of hairpins with snowflakes using the master class below, let’s look at how exactly.

Snowflakes Kanzashi master class

To make a beautiful product, you need to buy the accessories indicated in the list below. For convenience, we will consider separate details for the upper and lower flowers, then it will be clearer what is needed for one winter fantasy snowflake.

Details for making a small flower:

  • 12 pieces of satin ribbon each in white and blue colors - 2.5 * 52.5 cm;
  • 2 white felt bases - 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm;
  • 6 double-sided blue stamens;
  • blue rhinestone chain;
  • white half bead - 1.2 cm;
  • white beads with a diameter of 3 mm.

Details for making a large flower:

  • 7 pieces of white, blue ribbon, silver brocade - 5*5 cm;
  • white felt base - 4 cm.

Details for making seven branches:

  • 14 pieces of white and blue ribbon - 2.5 * 2.5 cm;
  • 7 pieces of blue ribbon - 2.5*2.5 cm;
  • 7 pieces of transparent rhinestones - 6 mm in diameter.

The winter ornament is conveyed by almost traditional types of kanzashi petals: triple sharp petals and round ones (double and single). Overall it turns out to be a beautiful and delicate decoration. In addition, there is interesting work ahead on independent modeling of the middle.

Snowflake-kanzashi step by step

The photo shows fragments of fittings necessary for interesting work. We will not dwell on preparing pieces of satin ribbons. Craftswomen already know that threads that come loose during cutting should be scorched with the flame of a lighter, and this should be done carefully and quickly. But we’ll tell you in more detail how to model an interesting middle. Cut out a square of felt. Glue a large half bead onto it. Cover it with a chain of blue rhinestones around it. Next, cover it with beads – small and elegant. Sew the beads tightly, without gaps. After this, use small scissors to cut the felt around the circumference, clearly connecting the cut to the edge of the center.

To create a triple petal from 5cm squares, fold all the squares twice.

You should get triangles. Assemble “puffs” from blue, white and silver ribbon. Close the sharp corners with your fingers, then seal them with a match and cut them off from the bottom.

To create double rounded petals, use 2.5 cm squares. Layer blue on white. Press the sharp corners to a right angle. To form a drop, round the inside, move the sides back, and solder in this position.

Insert small droplets into the holes of the large triple petals.

Cut a round felt and glue all 7 petals onto it.

Glue another 17 rounded petals into a small flower yourself (it will become the top one), prepare blue stamens for decoration.

Cut the stamen threads in half. Glue each head along the small petal.

Also make branches from small blue, light blue and white squares. Model rounded petals with a central fold, single-layered. There are 2 times fewer blue parts - they will become the tops, the rest should be placed in pairs on the sides. Glue the branches together and decorate with crystal droplets.

Glue the branches between the large petals of the bottom layer.

A beautiful winter product is ready. The frost outside the window draws unique patterns, and we were able to simulate an imitation of such a creation from ordinary satin ribbons.

Kanzashi new ideas

If you liked this technique, then we bring to your attention other master classes in the kanzashi technique.

Preparing for the New Year holidays is always an exciting thing: you need to buy gifts, decorate the room. A very original option is Kanzashi-snowflake. It is easy to make and looks like a fabulous souvenir. This product can transform the interior or be used as a gift or addition to it.

New Year's snowflake-kanzashi

As can be seen from the photographs presented in the article, these products look very beautiful and impressive. To make them you only need fabric. Due to the volume of the design, the play of light and shadow in the elements, the kanzashi-snowflake looks so beautiful. All parts are securely fastened, so you don’t have to redo the decor every year, as is the case with paper decorations, which tear and quickly become unusable. Another advantage of such crafts is their ease of manufacture, because making them is no more difficult than paper ones. You can decorate a window, a Christmas tree, a New Year's costume, and even make a garland with satin ribbon decor.

What you need

Kanzashi snowflake must be performed carefully and consistently, so it is better to find everything you need in advance. While working, do not be distracted by searching for missing materials. So, prepare the following:

  • Satin ribbons of different widths (from 5 mm for decorating the frame to 5 cm for making large elements).
  • Fabric of suitable quality, color and texture (nylon, organza).
  • Scissors.
  • Lighter, candle, matches.
  • Tweezers-clamp (for ease of use).
  • Needle and thread.
  • Thermal gun.
  • Cardboard.
  • Wire.
  • Decor (beads, beads, sequins, for example in the form of snowflakes).
  • Braid or for making a pendant (optional).

The list is presented to the maximum. In a minimal set you can get by with ribbons, scissors, a lighter and tweezers.

How to fold a single petal

How is a kanzashi snowflake made? The master class will teach you how to assemble simple blanks to create it.

Work like this:

  1. Cut the ribbon or other prepared fabric into squares.
  2. Treat the cuts over a candle flame or lighter.
  3. Fold the square in half, and then in half again. You can glue the layers together with a heat gun, sew them with thread, or heat the joining area over a lighter and squeeze it properly with tweezers so that the parts are fused.
  4. Trim the bottom corner of the resulting workpiece so that it takes on the appearance of a petal, similar to a ring.
  5. Having completed many of these details, you will be able to make up elements of rays for snowflakes and centers from the required number of parts.

How to make a double petal

To complete the beautiful ones below), you will need to make double petals.

The technology is like this:

  1. As for singles, cut the ribbons into squares. You can create a double element from both identical and different-sized pieces. In the first case, you will have to trim the bottom of the petal additionally. It is better to choose different colors and even textures. It will be more effective this way.
  2. Fold both squares individually into triangles.
  3. Repeat the previous step again.
  4. Place one triangle on top of another (smaller on top of larger).
  5. Perform the third addition of both blanks together.
  6. Connect like a single piece using a lighter, thread or hot glue.

Snowflake-kanzashi: master class

If you have mastered the method of making simple elements (single or double), you can start creating beautiful winter decor. In order for you to get the same beautiful kanzashi snowflakes (photo below), you just need to combine the manufactured parts in different versions.

To form the centers of snowflakes, you can make an element consisting of larger double petals with smaller single or the same double blanks glued into the middle. In addition, you can decorate the center of each petal by inserting and securing a drop-shaped pearl bead. It’s easy to create a huge number of options. It all depends on your imagination, perseverance and desire.

Snowflakes are assembled using two methods:

  1. No frame.
  2. On a wire-cardboard basis.

The second method is suitable for large products with long rays.

Small snowflakes can be made using the first method. In the version without a frame, the snowflake is simply assembled by gluing the elements together. First, blanks from several petals are assembled, and then large parts are assembled together.

Assembling a snowflake on a frame

If you decide to work with the frame, the sequence will be like this:

  1. When the required number of petals is ready, cut a circle out of cardboard according to the diameter of the snowflake's turn to cover the joints of the parts. Make the same circle, only with a larger diameter, from fabric.
  2. Place the cardboard blank on the fabric one and pull the edges of the fabric along the inner contour of the cardboard circle.
  3. Cut wire blanks for rays (3 large and the same number of small ones). The size is equal to the diameter of the snowflake (then the wire can be cut in half).
  4. Wrap the wire in corrugated paper (or replace it with a napkin). Apply glue.
  5. Glue narrow satin ribbons of a suitable color to the wires (they will be on the back).
  6. Cut the ray blanks into two parts.
  7. Proceed with assembly. Collect the middle of a snowflake, for example, from 6 petals. Glue the blank to the round cardboard-fabric base.
    Glue the prepared parts of the rays to the frame wire.
  8. Glue all the rays to the circle on the back of the snowflake. You can finish here, but if you want a neater back side, make a second circle of fabric and glue it on as a top layer. It is easy to attach a magnet to it. The circle can also have a cardboard base inside.
  9. Finish the front side: decorate with beads, if desired, treat the corners of each element with glitter gel.

Thus, the kanzashi snowflake is a beautiful decoration that is easy to make, and there are many uses for it.

For the New Year, you want to decorate your home in some unusual way. Fortunately, on the Internet you can find many master classes that make it easy to create any paper decoration. In this article we will present you an option for making New Year's snowflakes made from ribbons using the kanzashi technique.

Kanzashi was not originally a craft technique. This was the name of the flowers that Japanese geisha girls used to decorate their hair. These flowers were made from fabric and various bright scraps to match the color of the kimono and eyes. These flowers were and are the only decoration for Japanese women, because they cannot wear any earrings, rings, brooches or rings.

In addition, kanzashi indicated the social status of the woman or girl who decorated her hair with them. The more flowers a lady has on her head, the richer she is. However, if a woman got married, then she was no longer allowed to wear a lot of jewelry on her head. She could attach a maximum of two flowers to her hair to complete her look.

At first, when kanzashi first came into fashion in Japan, they were ordinary simple combinations of fabric that looked like daisies. Only at the beginning of the 19th century a new style of kanzashi appeared - “tsunami”, thanks to which the flowers became multi-tiered, voluminous and more beautiful.

Kanzashi-tsunami were made only from handmade Chinese natural silk. The Japanese themselves already dyed silk in the colors they needed, using natural dyes.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Japanese even began to open workshops in which professional fabric flowers were made for all seasons. For example, in the spring, they create yellow kanzashi:

  • Daffodils
  • Peonies
  • Peach flowers

These same flowers are green in summer and red in autumn.

Europeans picked up the idea of kanzashi at the end of the 19th century and began to use it not only to create flowers, but also many other shapes. As a needlework technique, in Russia kanzashi began to be used to make hairpins decorated with flowers. Petals can be made in two forms:

  • Round

  • Acute

In exactly the same way you can make Kanzashi snowflakes made from ribbons. We will present a detailed master class on making one of these snowflakes in the next section.

How to make snowflakes from kanzashi with your own hands?

Snowflakes in kanzashi style look gentle and elegant. They can be used to decorate a Christmas tree, a brooch or a hairpin for a girl. We suggest you make one like this Kanzashi snowflake for New Year:

To make one product you need a set of the following materials:

  • 12 satin squares with sides of 5 cm in blue and white colors (6 pieces of each color, respectively)

  • 37 satin squares with sides 2.5 cm in blue and white colors
  • 6 brocade square blanks made of lurex and shiny thread with sides of 4 cm
  • One circle of felt (either white or blue), the diameter of which is 3.5 cm
  • Needle, thread, heat gun
  • A small bead and a bead hugger corresponding to its diameter

The entire snowflake should consist of three main parts:

  1. Main (large) flower made from 5 cm square blanks
  2. Small flower made from 2.5 cm square blanks
  3. Branches (6 pieces) from white and blue squares

Now let's figure out step by step how to do this a simple kanzashi snowflake:

  1. Fold three different squares - white, blue and brocade - diagonally to form triangles.

  1. Place the resulting triangles on top of each other (on blue and white, and then on brocade) and fasten them with a needle, but do not sew them together.

  1. Make a petal from this blank, sewing it together as in the photo:

  1. Make 6 small petals from white satin ribbon

  1. Insert these petals into the larger ones so that they look like this:

  1. Make small double petals from small satin squares and then combine them into a flower:

  1. Glue the large and small flowers together using a heat gun:

  1. Glue a white felt circle on the wrong side:

    1. Make rays from small white and blue petals and glue them between the petals of a large flower.

      1. Glue a bead to the small flower to complete the snowflake.

This snowflake can be used in different ways. For example, attach a bobby pin or hairband to it. Then you will get a wonderful New Year's hairpin for a girl who is going to dress up in a Snow Maiden costume for a matinee. You can trim her dress with exactly the same snowflakes.

By attaching a braid to such a snowflake, you can decorate the New Year tree very elegantly. Moreover, now decorating a Christmas tree in this style is very popular and fashionable, since glass toys were popular many years ago. You can also make a garland out of snowflakes by simply sewing them together.

At the same time, snowflakes do not have to be made from ribbons of cold shades. You can use any tape you have on hand. In any case, snowflakes will look harmonious on the New Year tree and will not go unnoticed by the guests who come to your home for the holiday.

In the video below, the needlewoman shows master class on making kanzashi snowflakes for beginners. Here you can see the process of creating a snowflake, which we described in the article. Only here a slightly different fabric was used, and the snowflake itself has a different shape.
