The peculiarities of making chevrons mean that they are attached to stretchy fabric and then sewn onto the product. And the quality of the finished product depends on the level of hooping. They have a huge number of varieties.

The uniforms of many organizations and departments are decorated with a sewn chevron - the insignia of various professional corporations, denoting various corporate characteristics.

Application of insignia

The chevron is part of the uniform equipment of various structural units:

  • police
  • police
  • military
  • security guards
  • some enterprises

Often, insignia are used for uniforms of staff of huge network marketing, hypermarkets, or are used to designate brands. The chevron is used to distinguish enterprises or law enforcement agencies, or for the purpose of advertising a certain brand. Consumers quickly recognize by signs which company or power structure the employees represent. Clothing decorated with insignia looks representative and respectable. Sportswear is also decorated with certain signs that distinguish different sports enterprises.

Making an embroidered chevron

Let's take a look at the chevron, which is made from a fairly dense fabric base, cut in the shape of a circle, oval or square and decorated with embroidered logo of a particular company or organization:

1. The edges of the formed distinctive part are well processed with thread.

2. The logo of the required structural unit or sports enterprise is embroidered in the center of the created element.

3. Having finished manufacturing and embroidering the part, the chevron is sewn to uniform or other thing representing the brand of the advertised company.

Methods for making chevrons

Features of chevron manufacturing have different ways fixation to the product. Quite often, chevrons are used to replace regular embroidery on difficult-to-embroider fabric, such as lacoste or knitwear. This happens due to the poorly visible embroidery on the material described, as it is lost in the soft fabric - embroidered chevrons will look great and quite attractive. To strengthen and strengthen the product, you need to fix the embroidered chevron from the inside of a uniform jacket or other clothing with an adhesive solution. The adhesive base is used when gluing the chevron to the product using a hot iron. If you have a heat press, you can use it. Embroidered patches are of great importance for hats. Due to the miniature embroidered area, the embroidery process is too difficult. The process of sewing or gluing ready-made distinctive signs embroidered with bright threads saves the day. By using special glue, the prepared embroidered piece is placed on the cap, making it luxurious and magnificent. These manipulations can be performed on any small product; the embroidered patch is fixed easily, without complications of the work being done.

Benefits of an embroidered patch

Embroidered chevrons have the following advantages:

  1. Colorful, great color to match the base.
  2. Thread coloring is resistant to temperature changes and repeated washing, cleaning and wear.

The products described above last a long time, as does the unique shape, so they are sewn and glued by the owners of popular brands and structural units. In most cases, the embroidery of an element is done by machine using a computer technique, simplifying the entire process of the intended work. Badges are mostly embroidered en masse for a huge number of uniforms.

Manufacturing process

Having theoretically familiarized yourself with the work process and having an idea of chevrons, you can move on to creating interesting, colorful embroidery.

Let us consider in detail the features of chevron manufacturing. For creative work We definitely need an embroidery machine, even a household one.

To complete the creative procedure we will need:

  • selected embroidery pattern
  • fabric base
  • required spool threads of different colors
  • tailor's scissors
  • lighter or candle
  • wooden hoop
  • glue stick

Work progress

Step 1

We thread the prepared synthetic white lining into the hoop.

Step 2

The outline of the future patch is marked by tracing it with a special marker.

Step 3

The workpiece is placed under the needle of the machine, machine stitches are made. To be sure, you can machine stitch along the outline of the patch being made.

Step 4

The marked part is well and thoroughly smeared with the adhesive solution.

Step 5

The main fabric is glued to the lining. Shiny satin looks beautiful and unique in finished product. If desired by the customer or needlewoman, you can use it.

Step 6

On the prepared base, a picture of the future logo is drawn with a special marker, and all the necessary lines are marked.

Step 7

The hoop with the prepared fabric tucked in is placed in the sewing machine.

Step 8

The prepared image is embroidered. We machine stitch along the edge of the product for secure fixation. In the process of creative and interesting work, we use a triple stitch or the narrowest zigzag. Triple stitching looks more impressive.

Step 9

We stop the machine and cut the threads, removing the hoop with the work.

Step 10

Using well-sharpened tailor's scissors, we cut off the excess fabric beyond the triple stitch or zigzag line. We cut as close as possible to the stitched line and very evenly. This is done with the sharp tip of a cutting object, focusing on not damaging or cutting through the lining fabric.

Step 11

The product is placed in the machine and the edges of the product are processed with a special seam.

Step 12

The finished patch is pulled out of the stabilizer. You need to carefully cut it out of the lining. To even out all the errors in the actions taken, move on to the next step.

Step 13

Using a gas lighter, draw a flame along the edge of the chevron. We try not to overexpose the product to avoid fire.

Step 14

All excess threads on the product itself are trimmed, giving it a neat appearance.

The process of making a uniform chevron, which requires attention and accuracy, is over. All that remains is to fix the made patch on the selected clothing.

Having learned how to embroider chevrons, you can decorate all kinds of clothes and hats with them, attracting everyone's attention with small bright and colorful details.

I will not write about the principles of working with programs for creating machine embroidery in this post - I’ll say it right away! I will post similar lessons later.
I just recently made one custom patch and decided to describe step by step one of the options for processing its edge without the use of special tools (such as laser cutting). What is called "patches at home". The only condition is the presence of an embroidery machine (even a household one will do).
Let's begin. What we need: embroidery design, scissors, lighter, glue stick.
We hoop the stabilizer. In this lesson I used very cheap (about 8-9 rubles per meter) tear-away nonwoven fabric. I also really like using a synthetic lining. white- it is also good for this method edge processing (I’ll explain why later).

We load the design into the machine and do the wrapping. Next, as you are used to: if you already know the dimensions of the design, just put a crosshair in the upper-left corner, if not, you can machine stitch along the contour of the future chevron. We smear the marked area with a glue stick (and this is actually a very economical and reliable option!!). And glue the base fabric of the chevron (picture below). In this case I used blue satin crepe. Crepe satin has an interesting surface with a shine, which somewhat resembles an area filled with embroidery (tatami). At least that’s what they say on all sorts of smart sewing and embroidery forums. I personally don’t see much similarity, I just like the shine of this material and the way it comes out appearance at the finished chevron.

Well, that's all for now. We insert the hoop into the machine and it says that we have a future masterpiece. It is advisable that a stitch also be made along the contour of the patch along the fabric - just in case (especially if the embroidery machine is a household one). As I wrote above, I will not analyze in detail the construction of the design itself here. I will only say that after filling the “core of the stripe” (the innermost pattern), you need to make either a triple machine stitch or a very narrow zigzag approximately in the middle of the future satin roller (this is something like stitching the edge of a chevron - they are everywhere!). I prefer triple stitching. We stop, trim the threads and take out the hoop.
We carry the hoop onto a flat horizontal surface. Our further manipulations will be carried out using scissors. It is advisable to use well-sharpened tailor's scissors (make sure the tip cuts well).
We cut off the excess fabric beyond the triple stitch (or zigzag) on the outside. You need to cut as close to the triple stitch as possible and as evenly as possible. You probably already guessed that it is very convenient to do this with a sharp tip of scissors or good scissors with slightly rounded edges (they are also sold in sewing stores). The main thing is not to cut through the stabilizer! The pictures below roughly show how this procedure occurs and what should be the result. You can see that the triple stitching almost becomes the edge of the patch. But this is temporary))

And again we rush to the embroidery machine. Insert the hoop and continue embroidering. The machine, of course, knows nothing about our recent manipulations with scissors and continues to embroider. As a result, it turns out that one side of the satin roller clings to the edge of the chevron (inside the triple stitching), and the other is making holes in our stabilizer (which is not good). And it turns out something similar to an overlock stitch (only the stitch is not a chain stitch, but a shuttle stitch, but these are trifles)).
So. The machine finished embroidering and made some noise strange sound to inform the owner about this.
If you used a tear-off stabilizer, then simply tear the finished patch out of it (although you can trim it carefully). If you used a lining, then all that remains is to cut out the patch from it. And now miracles begin. Having torn out the patch, you see that a rag has appeared behind the satin roller - fibers of the tear-away stabilizer, or a narrow edge of the white synthetic lining remains. IT'S NOT NICE!
We trim the shaggy tear-away interlining (we, one might say, trimmed the lining when we cut out the chevron from it) so that it is shorter. Now take a lighter and draw a flame near the edge of the chevron. Don’t hold the fire in one place for a long time, otherwise you might even burn the chevron. In the same way, you can “bake” the remains of the lining along the edge of the chevron (and everyone scolds synthetics!). And again I provide small illustrations of the described actions.

We are glad to offer you machine sewing of stripes. We make patches according to your sketch and sew them on any products, we can also sew ready-made patches that you bring to us.

We also have a separate master class on how to glue a patch with thermal film.

How to sew on a ready-made patch yourself?

You have a patch, but you don't know how to attach it to your clothes. There are two ways: machine and manual. We do not recommend the machine version; unwanted stitches may remain on the patch; they will be visible on the outside and on the inside and will ruin the whole idea. Our master class is dedicated to the second option, hand sewing. This method is available even to those who have never picked up a needle. In addition, we will tell you about a special hidden stitch that will help make the fastening invisible. A little patience and accuracy - and you can sew a patch to your clothes!

For your convenience, we have included step-by-step illustrations in the instructions on how to sew on a patch. Each picture can be enlarged, you just need to click on it! We're using a small biker skull patch and hoodie as an example.

1. Before sewing on the patch

We take a sweatshirt and a patch and figure out where it needs to be sewn. To prevent the patch from moving out while we are sewing it, we recommend securing it. This can be done using double-sided tape, if you don't have it, use a pin. If the patch is large and complex in shape, use more attachment points.

You can sew a patch on any item of clothing: T-shirt, shirt, jacket, jacket, baseball cap. The patch can also be placed on a bag or backpack, on a scarf or hat, in general, on any suitable surface.

We need to secure the patch so that it does not fidget during the sewing process, then the result will be smooth and neat. Take a pin or needle, press the patch to the sweatshirt and in one motion make a piercing from the face inside out and from the inside out to the face. If the patch is thick, it will take force to pierce it. Do this carefully so as not to damage the front part.

I'm afraid to prick the patch because I'll ruin the front part of it.. There is another old-fashioned way to sew a patch evenly: first circle it with a piece of soap. Then you will not need to secure the patch itself, just sew along the line you drew.

2. Thread selection

We also need a needle and regular sewing thread. It will be good if you use a thread of the same color as the edging of the patch. If the color is exotic, and you don’t have a suitable spool in your arsenal, it doesn’t matter, you can sew it with white threads if the edging is light, with black threads if it’s dark, or choose the closest shade available. We take a double thread - for strength. Tie a knot at the end of the thread.

How to tie a knot?. Unwind the threads with a reserve. Thread one end of the thread through the needle and drag until both ends are the same (bring them together and observe. Hold in right hand a needle, in the left - the ends of the thread. Wrap the ends around the index finger of your left hand (just one turn; be careful not to cut yourself with the needle while winding. Insert the needle between index finger left hand and made a turn. Remove your finger from the coil and pull the ends of the thread and the needle at the same time, tightening the knot.

Is it possible to make a setting?. If you know how to sew, you can make a bartack. If you don’t know how, it’s better to make do with a knot. In our sewing method, it will still not be visible.

3. Securing the knot

Go. The knot should be inside so that it is not visible, and it is better to start sewing from the bottom of the patch.

This is my first time sewing and I don’t understand anything.. Hold the patch with your left hand, hold the needle in your right (if you are left-handed, vice versa. The first photo shows the movement of the needle: lightly stick it into the edging from the back of the patch and drag it a little, without bringing it to the front side of the patch. Pull the needle further, making a stitch. Knot will stop your movement (see second photo.

4. We begin to sew on the patch

Now you need to take the next step: stick the needle into the sweatshirt from the right side. How to choose a puncture site? Press the patch onto the sweatshirt and remember the place where the sweatshirt comes into contact with the knot. Inject exactly there.

5. Sewing the patch

Sew on the fixed patch using hidden stitches. The stitches do not need to be done very often; a distance of 8-10 mm is quite suitable. We pass the needle through the fabric, making a small stitch on it, then take it out and drag it through the edging of the patch.

This is my first time sewing and I don’t understand anything.. Now you need to make a stitch. For the first time, to make the task easier, you can completely pull the needle inside out, look from the inside out, feel the edging of the patch through the sweatshirt, count a few millimeters from the first puncture in the direction of the edging and make a second puncture in reverse side, from the inside out to the face. This is called "making a stitch." It’s easier and faster to make stitches in one movement, without looking at the wrong side. In the first photo you see an example of a stitch in one movement: a puncture of the fabric from the front side inside out, immediately a second puncture, from the inside to the face, and only then the entire thread is passed through. All punctures are performed in one movement, the needle is constantly held on the front side.

6. Sew the patch on with small stitches

To ensure that there are no long stretched threads on the back of your sweatshirt, make a slip between the stitches inside the edging of the patch itself, and sew stitches on things - a maximum of 1 mm long, so they will be less noticeable and subsequently there will be no big risk of accidentally breaking the thread when washing or wearing .

We make a fastening - 2 stitches with a loop - for reliability, carefully on the edging of the patch. The loop should be tightened into a knot, and the excess thread should be cut off.

This is my first time sewing and I don’t understand anything.. With a loop, when you start to make a stitch (pierce the patch and fabric and begin to pull the needle from the wrong side, you do not fully pull the thread. You do not finish the movement. And, returning the needle from the wrong side to the face, you pass it into the formed loop and only then until tighten the thread at the end - and you get a knot. Look more closely at the first illustration of step seven. You can see how the thread forms a loop. Starting position: you are on the front side, you have a needle in your hands, there is a thread in it that comes out of the stripe - on the front side. The algorithm of your actions: 1. Stick the needle into the patch. 2. Move the needle further to pierce the fabric. 3. Intercept the needle from the wrong side. 4. Pull, BUT! Do not tighten the thread! threads from the front side, which you pulled out tightly during the stitches, and now you hold the needle from the wrong side 5. Pierce the fabric with a needle 6. Punch the needle through the loop you left, as in the first illustration in the step. seven. 8. Pull the thread, now tightly, and thus tighten the knot.

On favorite dress attach the doll’s embroidered face (you can use a regular piece of light-colored fabric, and attach beads instead of eyes, nose and mouth), just below the doll’s dress (a piece of bright colored fabric). The doll is almost ready. All that remains is to give her a voluminous hairstyle. For this you can use threads or thin ribbons. Handles and legs can be knitted or woven from threads. Surely such a doll on clothes will be an excellent decoration.
