In the previous master class, I showed how to sew a cap for a baby. Today we will sew another summer headdress for our son - a bandana.

We will need cotton fabric, since the bandana for the baby should be comfortable, absorb moisture well and allow air to pass through. I took a cotton jersey - a cooler.

There will be only one pattern - a barrel.

We cut two parts of the barrel, as well as 2 additional rectangles: the middle part is 33 cm * 10 cm, and the lower part is 85 cm * 8 cm.

Sew the barrels to the middle part. We still have a small tail left. We process the seams on the overlocker and the cuts of the remaining tail.

Now we need to measure the circumference of the bandana. We measure the bottom cut in a circle, with the exception of the width of the tail at the back. I got 53 cm. Now we fold our rectangle - the lower part in half across. We set aside half of our resulting length from the fold. That is, for me it is 53 divided by 2 = 26.5 cm. Let’s mark it.

Sew on both sides to the mark. You can make ties at the corner. Cut off excess.

Now, before we turn out our ties, we need to notch the seam allowance. To make it more clear, I will show it in a diagram.

The notch must be made very carefully, not reaching 1 mm from the line!

We turn out our ties.

We pin and sew the loose allowance of the bandana and the loose allowance of the ties.

We process the cut with an overlocker. Using a gypsy needle, we hide the tails of the overlocker into the seam. Iron the product.

A bandana is a simple piece of fabric with a pattern (or plain color), a headdress for protection from the sun. Initially, a square scarf was used to protect the face from dust and smoke. Centuries later, the bandana has become a fashion accessory that even celebrities do not disdain.

History of the headscarf

The name "bandana" was borrowed from Hindi; this word was used to describe chintz with a paisley pattern that was widely used in the past.

Bandanas were worn by farmers, pirates, cowboys and railroad workers. A scarf was tied around the head or neck; it was convenient for wiping away sweat and protecting the respiratory tract from debris and strong winds. The bandana was often used as a homemade duffel bag or knapsack.

The headscarf received a second life during the heyday of gangster groups in North America in the 80s of the 20th century. With its help, it was customary to emphasize one’s belonging to one or another street gang. The headscarf was also popularized by rap singers. Now the bandana - fashion accessory, capable of highlighting the individuality of its owner.

Headscarves for fashionistas are embroidered with precious and semiprecious stones, sequins and jewelry beads. Bandanas made from the fur of various animals are expensive and in demand in many countries.

Making a bandana pattern

You can easily and quickly sew a remarkable scarf yourself. To do this, you only need to choose a fabric of a suitable size with an interesting pattern. The bandana pattern is so simple that it’s not worth talking about it again.

The standard size of a headscarf for an adult is 61 cm by 61 cm. It is very easy to choose a more precise size; you need to measure the circumference of the person’s head. Let's say you need to sew a scarf for a child with a head circumference of 55 cm. Let's apply a simple formula from a school geometry course on calculating the diagonal of a square. The required minimum length for the bandana pattern will be 55 / 1.414 (square root of two) = 38.1 cm.

To make a bandana with your own hands, the pattern should be drawn according to individual sizes. To the resulting value you need to add a few more centimeters for allowances and a fixing “tail”.

The selected piece of fabric for the bandana pattern should be spread on the work table. Using tailor's chalk and a ruler, mark the required length and width on the fabric. The result should be a perfect square with allowance marks. If you can use an overlocker when sewing and process the edges of the bandana with it, allowances will not be needed.

Sew a bandana pattern

Some tips:

  1. It is worth making sure that the calculations are correct, fold the workpiece diagonally and arrange the first fitting.
  2. When making a bandana with your own hands, it is better to process the pattern using a sewing machine or overlocker. will not look nice and neat.
  3. The workpiece must be cut evenly and carefully; the final appearance of the product will depend on this.

Sewing a bandana, the pattern of which is described above, is very easy. To do this, the scarf seams need to be folded along the marked lines, fastened with sewing pins or basted and ironed. Then the sections should be processed with a closed edging seam.

Bandanas for babies

A headscarf can become an indispensable accessory for kids. A scarf is more comfortable for a child than a Panama hat or a baseball cap. The bandana does not block the view and sits tightly on the head, does not fall off or get in the way.

A bandana for children can be used not only as a headdress, but also as neckerchief- bib. This is truly an irreplaceable and multifunctional item in the wardrobe of every little fashionista.

MK cutting and sewing a scarf for kids

Making a bandana pattern for a boy is more difficult than for an adult. The scarf will require two pieces of fabric. Both materials should be soft, natural and absorb moisture well.

The scarf for a child does not look like a square, but like a triangle with buttons and fasteners along the edges.

You should attach the pattern to the folded material and carefully cut it out. Repeat the steps for cutting the second fabric.

You need to fold the parts with the right side inward and “bait” with thread or fasten the parts with pins. Then sew the bandana around the edges using sewing machine, slightly not finishing the seam to the end.

Turn the scarf right side out through the remaining hole. If difficulties arise, you should use a pencil or thin stick. Having straightened the corners, you should iron the bandana and carefully finish the seam from the front side.

To install the button you will need special pliers. They are sold in any handicraft store and the packaging states detailed instructions on their use. In the same department you can purchase buttons for clothes themselves.

It’s very easy to decorate the product using decals in the form of animals or cartoon characters. Such applications are applied to the fabric with the adhesive layer down, covered with damp gauze or a cotton scarf and heated with an iron for 30 seconds. For stylization, you can embroider a monogram or a whole design on a scarf.

- This is a summer headdress in the form of a scarf. Very often, children's bandanas are equipped with elastic bands (to make it easier to put on) or visors (for additional eye protection from the sun). The advantage of a bandana is its simplicity. This type of headdress is easy to put on, can be cleaned (washed) without any problems, and can be sewn without the slightest problem.

In this article we will talk about how to sew a bandana for a boy or girl at home. Believe me, this is easier to do than it might seem.

DIY children's bandana

To create a bandana with an elastic band according to our pattern you will need:

Please note that the sizes we indicate are designed for a head volume of 52-54cm. If the volume of the child’s head is larger or smaller than stated, the pattern should be adjusted accordingly.

Completing of the work

  1. A bandana pattern for a boy (girl) consists of three parts: two rectangles and an elastic band. Since our elastic band is ready, you will only have to cut two rectangles. Please note that on the outside of each part you should leave 1 cm (seam allowance). As a result of the allowance, the dimensions of the main part (larger rectangle) will be 42x26, and the side drawstring part (smaller rectangle) will be 28x7cm.
  2. We fold the small rectangle (smaller part) facing inward and pin it together using pins. After this, the part is stitched, with a distance of 1 cm from the edge (in this case, the threads must be secured). If there are excess edges of the seam allowances, they can be trimmed, but keep in mind that the free edge must be at least 5mm.
  3. After this, the small rectangle (drawstring) should be turned out and ironed. In this case, it is most convenient to place the seam on the side.
  4. Then insert an elastic band into the finished drawstring. To make this as simple as possible, you can use this device:
  5. After the elastic is inserted into the drawstring, its edges need to be fixed. The easiest way to do this is to simply sew them together at a distance of about 5 mm from the edge of the fabric.
  6. After all the parts are cut and processed, we begin assembling the product. To do this, a large rectangle is placed face down on the drawstring (the raw edge of the rectangle is on the short side of the small part)
  7. The second edge of the main part should be placed on top so that the drawstring is inside the “pipe” of a large rectangle.
  8. Then we turn the “pipe” so that the drawstring is along its edge.
  9. We turn the part over so that the chipped part is at the bottom.
  10. After this we begin to make an “accordion”. This part of the work should be done very carefully and carefully. First, we bend the edge of the part, placing it on top of the drawstring and the gathered edges of the rectangle. We check that our bookmark is equal in width to the width of the drawstring. If this is the case, everything is in order, but if not, mix the parts so that both widths match. For ease of work, you can pin the resulting “package” together with pins.
  11. We stitch the resulting “accordion”. Of course, stitching repeatedly folded fabric is not very convenient, but considering that our bandana is made of light fabric, it is still possible to do this. Then you should carefully trim off the excess edge of the fabric.

A bandana is a versatile and fashionable accessory. You can tie it around your head to hold your hair back, show off your deep passion for something, or simply show off your own unique style. In case of emergency, a bandana can be used as a handkerchief, a dust mask or a napkin to remove sweat from the face, it can also be used to protect yourself from the sun or to bandage a wound. And most importantly, a bandana is easy to make yourself from almost any type of fabric. Before you know it, you will have a unique bandana of your own making ready.

Steps

Part 1

How to make a bandana

Take a large piece of fabric. The size of the fabric should be no less than 61x61 cm. You can take any fabric you like, but it is best to use affordable cotton muslin, which is quite resistant to wear. Try to avoid fabrics that may cause itchy skin.

Draw square on fabric. To do this, you will need something that can be used to draw straight lines, such as a regular stationery ruler or a meter tailor's ruler. On patterned fabric, you can simply follow the straight lines of the pattern. You need to draw a square with a side length of about 61 cm, but this parameter can be slightly increased or decreased to make the bandana fit better.

Cut out a square of fabric. If you have taken a fabric whose main component is cotton, it will be easiest to make just the initial cut with regular sharp scissors or special fabric scissors. Because cotton fabrics They tear quite easily, you may be able to simply tear the fabric further in the direction of the weave of the threads along the drawn line.

    • If you do not know the composition of the fabric you have chosen, in order not to accidentally spoil it, it would be better to cut out the entire square with scissors.
    • Sometimes even completely natural cotton fabrics do not allow them to be torn evenly. If you don't have a lot of fabric, it's safer to cut out the bandana with scissors.
  1. Try the cut out bandana on your head. At this point, you can try on the bandana to see how well it fits. If it is too big, you can reduce it. At the same time, remember that the extra 1.3-5 cm from each edge will be spent on hemming the fabric sections.

    Part 2

    How to hem cuts

Determine the width of the hem allowance. A wider seam allowance will be easier to work with, but will create a wide double fold around the perimeter of the bandana. For a bandana, on average, you can allocate 5 cm from each edge of the square of fabric. This fabric will be folded and stitched twice so that the edges of the product do not fray.

Iron the hem of the fabric. To get an even hem seam, you need to make sure that the fabric also lies flat before stitching, so you will need to press the double hem on its edges with an iron. To get medium-sized folds, turn the edges of the fabric 1.5 cm for the first time and iron the folds. Then, in the same way, fold in the remaining 3.5 cm of seam allowance a second time and iron it too.

Secure the hem with tailor's pins. Make sure the folds on all four sides of the bandana are straight and neat. If necessary, adjust the fabric to correct any distortions and iron again. Once everything is straight, secure the folds with tailor's pins to prevent the fabric from shifting while seaming.

Place a hem seam. The easiest way to do this is with a sewing machine, but if you don’t have one, you can easily use a regular one. sewing needle and thread. Insert the thread into the needle and pierce all the folded layers of fabric with it so that the knot on the thread is on the wrong side of the bandana and is not visible from the face. Then continue to alternately bring the needle out to the wrong side and then to the front side at regular intervals between the puncture points. If the thread runs out, tie it with a knot on the wrong side.

Show off your handmade bandana. There are many ways to wear a bandana. Experiment with them to see which style suits you best. A couple of popular ways to wear a bandana are listed below.

    Part 3

    How to decorate a bandana

Choose the most suitable place to place your decorations. Depending on how you wear the bandana, the exact placement of the embellishments may vary. For example, if you're wearing a triangle bandana around your neck, you'll likely want to embellish the corner of that triangle with the bottom edge of the embellishment design facing that corner.

      • It will be useful to first try on the bandana and look at yourself in the mirror. After this, using a pencil or washable marker, you can mark the most suitable place for placing the jewelry.
    1. Decorate your bandana sewn on or thermal applications. Applications are great way express your passion for certain musical groups, games, sports teams and so on. If you are able to purchase iron-on appliqué, it can be iron-on, whereas regular appliques will need to be sewn on to stay in place.
