Weaving from wicker is quite a difficult and troublesome task, but recently an interesting direction in needlework has appeared - weaving from paper tubes, which made it possible to use the technique of weaving from wicker and at the same time simplified its process. In this master class we will get acquainted with the technology of how to weave a chest from newspaper tubes.

Master class: weaving a chest from newspaper tubes

You will need:

  • cardboard box and cardboard for lid;
  • newspaper tubes;
  • thick PVA glue, paper, brush;
  • paint (stain) and varnish for wood;
  • finishing fabric;
  • wide braid or thick fabric;
  • accessories for decoration.

Base of the chest

  1. We take a small cardboard box the right size. We mark its side edges every 2 cm and draw vertical lines.
  2. Along the bottom of the box on the lines we make holes at a distance of 3-5 mm from the bottom. We insert tubes into the holes and glue their ends from the inside. If the box is small, then the ends of the tubes can be secured from below at the bottom of the box.
  3. From the outside, we lift the tubes vertically along the lines and secure them on top with clothespins.
  4. We make weaving from tubes along the entire side surface of the box. Weaving “chintz”: we draw horizontally with one tube along the vertical bases, alternating passing from front to back. Next row we change the alternation.
  5. When we have finished weaving, we bend the vertical tubes at the top into the box and glue them.
  6. Lid
  7. We take a piece of cardboard and cut out a rectangle with a length equal to the length of the chest, and a width 10-15 cm greater than the width of the chest, depending on the future height of the lid. We bend the cardboard using an elastic band or wire, as in the photo.
  8. We trace the bend of the lid blank with a pencil on another cardboard, placing it on its side.
  9. We paste the two cut blanks for the sides of the lid with newspaper tubes.
  10. We glue the three parts of the lid for the chest from the inside using strips of paper 3-4 cm wide, bent at a corner. If necessary, cut the strip in some places.
  11. We braid the lid with tubes using chintz weave.
  12. Having glued the ends of the tubes to the inside of the lid, we glue wooden strips on top to its edges.
  13. We collect the chest.
  14. Glue a strip of thick fabric ( wide braid) at the junction of the lid and the box.
  15. On the outside, we seal the junction of the two parts with paper.
  16. We cover the inside of the box with thin white paper.
  17. If you glued the tubes from the outside to the bottom of the box, then close them by gluing cardboard. We make legs from coiled tubes.
  18. We cut out fabric to the size of the bottom of the chest and glue the lining.
  19. We paint the outer surfaces of the chest with paint and varnish in 2 layers. When weaving a chest with newspaper tubes, upon completion of the work, be sure to paint the product well so that the text does not show through.

Here we have such a beautiful chest!

I always enjoy watching how the technique of weaving paper tubes develops. Just recently, baskets and boxes were considered the height of perfection, but today the Internet is filled with absolutely amazing things woven from paper.

I constantly monitor new developments in this technique and, of course, immediately add them to my collection. So it is this time.

Following small products, the need for large and durable things appeared, and the most inventive craftsmen began to look for ways to implement this trend.

I myself wove two large and durable boxes from paper tubes for storing things. Just recently I recommended you a master class from a craftswoman yalama on weaving a banquette from paper tubes. But today I am pleased to present to your attention a master class Polina Mayorova about how to make a frame for a chest woven from paper tubes - a long-awaited event.

Required: plywood, 2cm wooden blocks and screws.

I primed it and stuck a napkin on it. Bottom dimensions 25 by 15

At the corners there are 2 cm indentations for the side posts. From there we begin to mark holes for risers. Drill 5mm

We fasten the corner sticks from the bottom with self-tapping screws.

We cut the crossbars to the required size and fasten them to each other with self-tapping screws

A frame is also made for the lid. I immediately paint the frame in the color of the product so that there are no gaps

I drip PVA Storlyar into the holes and insert risers

I braid with a regular rope into two tubes, the corner sticks are braided like regular risers

This is the kind of assistant I have for weaving fabric for the lid. A stick on legs with holes at a distance of 2 cm from each other. Everything is simple and very convenient

We always try to make our home more comfortable and pleasant. Everyone knows that everything beautiful is in the little things. Every year many different idle little things accumulate, which are pleasant memories and over time there is simply nowhere to store them. Of course, you can buy a beautiful basket or even a small chest of drawers for storage. But you can try to make things with your own hands that will give your home a special coziness and allow you to save a lot of money. And today we will try to make a chest from newspaper tubes.

Everyone is well aware of the various products made from wicker. The technology is quite complex to implement, and it is not always possible to find a suitable vine. Even in the distant past, when the production of paper and newspapers ceased to be a luxury and became affordable, oriental craftsmen, mainly from Korea and Japan, came up with such an interesting and affordable technology that is popular to this day.

In this master class we will introduce you to the technology of weaving chests and consider in detail each stage of the work.

Let's start making

For work we will need the following material:

  • cardboard or a pastry box are perfect. Select the box size according to the desired chest size. You will also need a cardboard piece for the lid;
  • a lot of newspapers from which we will make straws;
  • PVA glue good quality, paper and brushes;
  • paint of the desired color and wood varnish;
  • fabric for interior decoration of the chest;
  • wide ribbon;
  • any details for decoration.

Prepared everything necessary materials and we can get to work.

First, let's prepare the base. We make markings on the side of the box, drawing vertical lines every 2 cm.

On each line we make small holes at a distance of 2-3 mm from the bottom, we fix the tubes in them and glue them to the bottom with glue.

On a note! If the chest is still small, you can glue the tubes to the bottom from the outside.

Weaving from newspaper (paper) tubes is becoming more and more popular and is becoming a favorite creative activity for many needlewomen.

In this master class I want to introduce you to the technology of weaving a chest from paper (newspaper) tubes.

IN paper vine chest You can store accessories, photographs, embroidery threads, craft materials, sewing supplies and much more.

To work you will need:

  • thick cardboard,
  • consumer paper,
  • knitting needle with a diameter of 2mm,
  • stationery knife,
  • shape (for example, a shoebox),
  • water stain,
  • PVA construction adhesive,
  • self-adhesive paper with a suitable pattern,
  • a few clothespins,
  • acrylic lacquer,
  • wide brush,
  • scissors,
  • accessories for decoration.

First we need to do paper vine. We twist the tubes using a knitting needle made of consumer paper; it is very thin, like newspaper, and grayish in color. You can buy it at office supply stores.

We divide the sheet using stationery or other sharp knife into 4 equal longitudinal strips and begin to twist the tubes. The angle of the knitting needle on the paper strip is 20°-30°.

You will need 100-150 tubes, the number will depend on the size of the chest.

I paint the tubes with water-resistant stains. The stains are different, and when mixed, different shades are obtained.

You will need:

  • ready-made straws,
  • water stain,
  • plumbing pipe with a plug with a diameter of 40mm,
  • latex gloves,
  • oilcloth to protect the surface,
  • water.

We obtain colors and shades through experiments, mixing stain with water.

When you have prepared everything you need to make the chest, you can get to work. Watch the video master class and create a similar craft to decorate your interior.

First coat the finished chest with PVA glue (construction glue), mixed 1:1 with water. Level and leave to dry for 12 hours. And then we cover acrylic varnish. We wait 3-4 hours and start decorating.

We attach any decorations we like using hot glue.

For a chest, you can also make a lock from newspaper tubes, glue ready-made decorative legs to the bottom, and use belts from old bags or other interesting accessories for decoration.

If the tubes are made from newspapers with a font, then it’s better to paint them later ready product white acrylic paint with PVA, and then painted in desired color, after this the font will not be visible.

Admire, rejoice, give as a gift!!!

Svetlana Bolshakova

I finally finished my braided box and is ready to show MK his craft.

Once upon a time, about 15 years or a little more ago, I signed up for courses on weaving from wicker. The courses were 2 years long, but they only lasted me a year. This is a difficult matter. The vine must be prepared, brought home, boiled in a large tank for 1.5 hours, sanded and weaved while it is wet. The dried, sanded rods must be soaked again overnight the next time we weave. And you need strong hands, mostly men's. Although the course was taught by a woman. She wove wonderful things. Over the course of the year, I accumulated a sufficient number of works that I gave away to my friends. Today I only have one basket.

This is a bird feeder, it hung outside the group’s window for a long time until it rotted from the rain, since it could not be varnished, the birds would not fly.

Here are some more works

The peeled vine lay on my mezzanine for a long time, but it never got its time. Now I needed chest for the project"Introducing children to Russian folk culture." Everyone weaves from newspaper tubes, so I decided to try it.

So let's start doing chest made of newspaper tubes.

We take a box (I had two of them, I took a small one, but in vain, it doesn’t fit much, we cut off the lids on three sides along the fold, and the fourth one is 3-4 centimeters above the fold, so that we can then glue the lid to it chest.

Slice newspapers stripes 9-10 cm wide.

Twist it newspaper strips on a knitting needle. The sharper the angle between the spoke and newspaper strip, the longer straw.

Glue the corner of the strip with PVA glue or glue stick. It must be kept in mind that when cutting straws, one part of it will unwind, because it is glued only on one side. We must try not to let it unwind, or you will have to screw it on and glue it again. We do a lot straws.

Paste tubes on the box. One end is on top inside the box, and the other is on the bottom. Tubular There should be an even number around the perimeter. And we begin to braid from left to right.

Ended extend the tube with another tube, inserting them one into the other. Sometimes I glued it overlapping.

This is what the box looks like.

We cut out two semicircles, these are the side walls of the lid. Paste on semicircles straws, cutting them off at the edges.

For the lid, cut out a rectangle by measuring along the long side of the box. For convenience, we will tighten it with an elastic band and glue the semicircles to it with a heat gun.

Paste tubes for the lid, gluing them inside the lid. Here you can stick an odd number, so that later you can glue the ends of the longitudinal straws under the extreme transverse (hide). We braid the lid.

Unsightly joints must be hidden. We paste them with narrow newspaper strip.

Glue the lid. Places where the lid is glued and "tongue", on which we will draw a keyhole, we glue it with a cloth using PVA glue for strength.

Already looks like box.

We paint it with acrylic paint, varnish it (I have yacht varnish, and screw in pre-purchased furniture handles. Wicker the chest is ready.

At first it turned out clumsily, but the higher I braided, the more accurate the work became. The lid was already braided almost beautifully. Now I want make a bigger chest.
