knitting and crochet book 1960-70 release

Yesterday I demonstrated how to tie a caterpillar cord. Now we will learn how to knit a “wide caterpillar”. I like this cord better and use it more often. In my opinion, it has a wider range of applications than an ordinary “caterpillar”.

Thank you for attention! Add my store to your circle, I will be glad to make new acquaintances!

The caterpillar cord is crocheted and used in:

- Romanian lace,

- for various ties and straps in clothes,

- in tying the edges of a knitted product,

- decoration,

- in the interior.

I often knit ties on children's hats with this cord, and of course the caterpillar cord is indispensable in summer clothes as straps on tops and ties on beach skirts.

You can knit from any yarn, wool, cotton, artificial fibers, or mixed yarn.

I offer you a detailed photo master class, and you can also watch the cord knitting technique in the video.

1. We knit two air loops

2. Insert the hook into the first air loop, pick up the thread and pull out the loop

Complete copying of the material is prohibited.

These different cords are made from different yarns.

I also suggest you watch a video on knitting a caterpillar cord.

If you know how to crochet, you want to improve your skills and create things that are no different from the work of professional designers. Knitted patterns look great in a skillful frame: openwork edgings give the product a complete look. Popular finishing of clothes, crocheted, the caterpillar cord is considered. To understand how it is done, it is advisable to read the instructions, which show how to create a crocheted caterpillar cord step by step.

Thin braid

The usual caterpillar cord is used in knitted products when creating straps for a summer top or sundress.

They can also be used to shape the dress along the waistline by pulling the cord through the arches of the loops. Connoisseurs of Irish lace cannot do without such a decorative cord in their works, since it actively participates in the creation of the openwork fabric.

In this work you will need:

  1. Cotton thread (yarn is taken that is involved in the main knitting of the product);
  2. Hook of the appropriate size.

To ensure that understanding the procedure for knitting a caterpillar cord does not cause any special problems, a corresponding diagram of working on the product is attached.

A pair of air loops are placed on the hook, the first of which is not pulled tight.

If the thread is quite thin and the first loop cannot be left weak, then the initial loop is tightened tightly, and in addition to it, two air loops are knitted again. And starting from them, the main knitting of the rope is carried out.

The hook is inserted into the first (obviously loose) loop and, pulling the thread out of it, another loop is knitted.

The remaining two loops on the hook should be connected by knitting a regular single crochet.

The hook is hooked under the side loop closest to it and grabs the main thread as shown in the photo.

Another loop is pulled out. The loops are connected to each other using the same single crochet stitch.

The work turns left again. The position of the thread is behind the hook.

Now you should throw the thread over the hook, pulling it through the last two knitted loops, and bring it out.

In this case, there are two open loops left on the hook, which need to be connected into one with a regular single crochet.

Further work involves turning the knitting to the left after each loop created in this way and continuing to alternately knit the cord.

The result should be a dense thin braid.

Wide edge

The wide caterpillar cord can easily play the role of an elegant belt. At the same time, it can be used not only in an ensemble of knitted clothes.

If you create stylish bracelets interspersed with beads or small pendants using the same yarn, made using the conventional braiding technique, then such a set will fit perfectly into the creation of an ethnic style.

A master class with step-by-step instructions demonstrates how to make a wide caterpillar cord.

You need to prepare for work:

  1. Cotton thread;
  2. Hook suitable for the thread size.

Three air loops are knitted. The first loop should be left loose.

The hook is pulled through the central air loop. The loops strung on the hook are connected in the usual way mating.

The work turns to the left. The thread remains at the back of the work.

Two single crochets are performed through the nearest loops of the previous row.

The hook is inserted into the outer loop of the bottom row.

The thread drawn out in this way is closed with a single crochet.

There is one working loop left on the hook. Knitting turns to the left.

The sequence of further actions remains unchanged: a single crochet is knitted into the adjacent loop of the underlying row, then the outermost loop is grabbed and knitted.

After this, the work again turns to the left and is repeated until the desired length of the cord is reached.

Lace element

In Irish lace, the caterpillar cord plays an important role. With its help, intricate snakes and curls are created that run across the canvas, and a volumetric accent is created along the edges of knitted flowers and abstract ornaments.

In Romanian lace, which is based mainly on the technique of making cords, knitting a decorative cord of a caterpillar is one of the main ones.

It is quite possible that summer will come someday in the middle zone. This means that it still makes sense to supply bread kvass. It will take at least a week to prepare a good starter, and as forecasters promise, by that time the air temperature should rise above 20 C (daytime).

How to prepare sourdough for
homemade bread kvass

Ingredients:

  • 2 liters of cold water;
  • 0.5 loaves of Borodino bread or 100 grams of rye flour + 100 grams of rye bread;
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar;
  • 3 grams of yeast.
  • Preparation time - 5-6 days

How to put kvass:

  • Fry the flour or pieces of bread until they darken (but do not char; with black bread it is sometimes difficult to tell whether it is just toasted or already burnt).
  • Dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar in lukewarm water.
  • After 10 minutes, add a third of the flour or breadcrumbs.
  • Drain almost all the water, add the same amount of fresh water, another spoonful of sugar and another third of crackers or flour with crackers.
    And insist again for a couple of days.
    Drain again, add the remaining crackers (or flour with crackers) and sugar. And fill it with fresh water again.
    During this time, the sourdough will lose its insolent yeasty taste and unpleasant bitterness and it will be possible to use it for drinking kvass. To do this, once every 1.5-2 days, you will need to add water, sugar to taste and a large handful of fresh rye crackers to a three-liter jar with the prepared starter, first removing some of the old soggy ones that have sunk to the bottom. For taste you can add raisins, mint, ginger, honey...
  • Decorative caterpillar cord is often used when knitting using the Irish or Romanian lace technique, which is also called lace lace. This cord has a beautiful textured surface with neat rounded edges; it feels dense to the touch and practically does not stretch. This master class provides a description with photos of knitting thin and thick caterpillar cord.
    For knitting thin cord make an initial loop on the hook, do not tighten the knot too much and knit 1 chain loop.

    Sequence of crocheting a cord: 1. Insert the hook into the initial knot. 2. Grab the working thread. 3. Pull a loop onto your hook. 4. Grab the working thread again and knit all the loops from the hook = 5.

    6. Using the tip of the lace, turn the work clockwise 180 degrees.
    7. Insert the hook into two half-loops from the side. 8. Grabbing the working thread, pull the second loop onto the hook. 9. Grab the working thread and knit 2 loops = 10 from the hook.

    11. Turn the work again by the tip of the lace 180 degrees in the same direction; on the side, two half-loops in a pair are clearly visible, through which you need to insert the hook = 12.
    13. Grabbing the working thread, pull the second loop onto the hook.
    14. Grab the working thread again and knit 2 loops from the hook.

    Knit the caterpillar cord, constantly repeating from steps 11 to 14 until it reaches the desired length.

    Thick caterpillar cord knitted according to the same principle, but the steps to complete it are somewhat more complicated.
    1. To knit a thick cord, you need to cast on 3 air loops.
    2. First insert the hook into the second loop of the chain, grabbing the working thread, pull the second loop onto the hook. Then insert the hook into the first loop of the chain and pull the third loop onto the hook.
    3. Grab the working thread and knit all three loops from the hook.
    4. Rotate the lace 180 degrees by twisting the end clockwise.

    5. Insert the hook from the top side through the two half loops of the last knitted loop.
    6. Grab the working thread and pull the second loop through the upper half loops onto the hook.

    7. Now insert the hook through the two half-loops on the side of the lace.
    8. Grab the working thread and pull the third loop onto the hook.
    9. Grab the working thread and knit all three loops from the hook.
    10. Rotate the lace 180 degrees by twisting the end clockwise.

    11. From the top side, insert the hook into two half-loops.
    12. Grab the working thread and pull the second loop onto the hook.
    13. Insert the hook from the side by three half-loops and, grabbing the working thread, pull the third loop onto the hook = 14.

    15. Knit all 3 loops from the hook.

    Next, repeat knitting a thick “caterpillar” cord from the 10th step to the 15th step as many times until it reaches the desired length.
