Current fashion season offers fur hats with pompoms. They are not cheap. The best way out is make your own pompom. By the way, thereby reducing the cost of the product to the maximum.

Tools and materials

Working with fur is quite difficult, but if you decide that you can handle the task, you need to stock up on special tools. To work you will need:

  • furrier's knife;
  • hand fur needles, threads;
  • thimble;
  • round pattern;
  • soap or chalk;
  • padding polyester

A furrier's knife is used to cut the skin. It’s quite difficult to do it yourself without experience and special skills. Professionals never use scissors! They cut only along the flesh, You cannot work on the fur side.

Important: Trimming should be done with extreme care to ensure that as little hair is trimmed as possible. The fewer hairs are trimmed, the more invisible the seam will be.

When working with fur, special needles with a triangular point are used. A regular needle may not be able to pierce thick leather fabric. You need to select a needle and thread in accordance with its thickness. When working with arctic fox or fox skins, use threads No. 80, for thin ones, for example, rabbit - No. 50, 60, for others - No. 40, 50. Threads are selected taking into account the color of the leather fabric.

To protect your fingers from pricks, use a thimble.

Use cardboard to make patterns. It is best to make the template round, this will make it easier to assemble the cut piece into a ball.

A thin piece of soap or chalk is needed to apply the outline of the template to the surface of the sandpaper.

The padding polyester will act as a soft filler for the pompom. If it is not there, you can use cotton wool or pieces of fabric.

Fur selection

Different skins have their own margin of safety. Otter fur is considered the most durable, followed by sable and mink. Rabbit fur wears out the fastest. But since the pompom does not constantly come into contact with surfaces, this characteristic is not of great importance.

The main thing you need to pay attention to is that the fur does not come out with every touch. This indicates its low quality.

If you're not very experienced needlewoman, it is better to take soft fur (mink, fox). It will easily come together into a ball. And a dense one, for example a mouton, does not fit well and bulges. To give such a pompom round shape, first you need to make several darts on the pattern from the edge to the center. And only then pull it into a ball.

Fur dyeing

If you decide to use leather that is no longer new to make a pompom, it is likely that it will need to be painted.

On a note: Before you start painting, the fur must be cleaned of dirt. Otherwise, the paint will not be absorbed well and streaks will appear on the skin.

To prepare a washing solution, take the following for 1 liter of water:

  • washing powder - 5 g;
  • ammonia - 5 g;
  • salt - 15 g;
  • soda - 10 g.

The resulting solution is applied to the entire surface with a brush, and then washed off under running warm water.

With its structure, natural fur resembles human hair, so it is quite suitable for dyeing regular hair dye. Before starting work, try the paint on a small piece. This way you can make sure that you get the desired shade.

After dyeing, the fur is thoroughly washed and, to consolidate the result, placed in a warm vinegar solution for several minutes. It is not recommended to use a fan or hair dryer to dry the skin.

For painting, it is better to take dyes of a darker shade than the base color. Otherwise, you may get unexpected results. For example, when dyed blond, mink becomes yellow.

Sewing instructions

After everything is ready to go, we move on to the master class on making a pompom.

Main stages:

  • making a template;
  • cut;
  • sewing;
  • pompom filling;
  • fastening on the cap.

Draw a pattern on cardboard. When making it, keep in mind that the original diameter should be 3-4 cm larger than the diameter finished product. Place the cut out pattern on a piece of fur and trace it with soap or chalk.

When cutting, the size of the fur is important. If it is a large collar, it is easy to cut out a circle of the desired diameter and start sewing. There will be no problems with how to make a pompom from a fur collar.

When using a narrow edge or fur strip, they need to be cut into several parts and sewn with a furrier's stitch in single canvas. Then you can start cutting.

Before cutting begins, it is very important to determine pile direction. With long pile this does not cause difficulties. Swipe your hand briefly. If the pile lies in the right direction, it will look smooth.

Having cut out the part, go along its contour with a thick thread using a seam “over the edge”. The thread should be of such a size that you can leave a small part of it at the beginning, and the same part when returning to the starting point.

By pulling the ends of the threads, you will begin to pull the fur into a ball. In order for the filler to acquire the required density, knock it down in your hands and fill the future pompom with it. Pull the edges together as much as possible to prevent the filling from falling out during wear. Secure the ends of the thread with a double knot.

You can sew a pompom to the hat. To ensure it holds well, secure it in at least 4 points.

  • strong threads (to match the color of the fur),
  • pen,
  • lace or ribbon,
  • padding polyester,
  • compass.

Step-by-step instructions “Do-it-yourself fur pompom”

Step 1

Using a compass, draw a circle of the required diameter on paper or cardboard. If there is no compass, draw a pen around the bottom of the jar. Using scissors, cut out the resulting template. The larger it is, the more voluminous the pompom will be.

Step 2

Now we apply the pattern to the back of the fur. We also trace it with a pen and cut it out along the contour with a stationery knife.

Step 3

We sew the circle with large stitches of thread over the edge. The ends of the threads do not need to be secured.

Step 4

Sintepon (cotton wool or foam rubber) will add volume to the product. It must be rolled into a ball and tied with ribbon.

Step 5

Leave the long ends of the tape. This way you can attach the pompom to the product.

Step 6

Tighten the threads into a strong knot and sew up the hole if there is one left. If you do not need to leave the tape outside, then the padding polyester does not need to be rolled up. It is enough to push the filler inside with a knitting needle until the desired volume of the product is obtained.

  5. pencil and compass

Using scissors, carefully cut a circle out of the fur along the cut line. Be careful not to damage the fur. I repeat once again that the scissors must be sharp, as furs do not like manipulation and can easily crumble and lose their rich appearance. A lot of original ideas appear among restless craftswomen at the sight of pom-poms. Experienced knitters can use them to create a huge number of unique and unrepeatable items. These products have only one drawback - their high cost. What if you make a fur pompom with your own hands, taking scraps from an old hat or collar? For skilled needlewomen, such work will not create difficulties.

So, how to make a fur pompom? Let's figure it out now! After all, the process of creating a fluffy accessory is quite simple and does not require serious skills.

What are pompoms used for?

These fluffies can be used to decorate a children's scarf, hat, or mittens.

If you make several small pompoms, then it is quite possible to decorate interior items with them, such as pillowcases for sofa cushions, blankets, etc.

A rich and luxurious stole will be made from large quantities parts like this - it will take a lot of time to create them, and the work will be difficult, but the result is worth it.

Nowadays, various fur jewelry - brooches, key rings, hair clips - are considered very fashionable. They look very interesting.

Tools and materials for work

If you follow our description in the process of creating pompoms, there will be no difficulties, but this activity will bring joy. How to make a pompom from fur? Make a few pieces with your child - he will be happy!

In order to make a fur pompom with your own hands, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • Segments quality fur- artificial or natural, as it is.
  • A piece of thick cardboard from which you will cut out a pattern using a compass.
  • A needle with a very strong thread.
  • A knife or scalpel for cutting the flesh.
  • Synthetic padding or cotton wool - to add volume to the pompom.

And, of course, stock up on sharp scissors.

If you have no experience working with fur, take softer fur - mink, fox. This texture is much easier to assemble into a round shape. A pompom made from mouton pieces is more difficult to make; it will bulge, bunch up and look sloppy. Experienced craftsmen make darts on patterns from the edges to the middle, sew them together, and only then pull them into a ball. It's pretty difficult task, not suitable for inexperienced craftswomen.

Please note that there are no damaged areas on the fur piece; the pile should not “shed”. To check, you just need to run your palm over the fur and assess the condition of the flap.

Each skin has its own strength. The most wear-resistant are otter and mink. Next behind them is sable fur. The most delicate and fragile is the rabbit. For example, pom-poms on hats interact little with other surfaces, but scarves constantly rub against clothing. Also, the finishing of bags and sofa cushions undergo mechanical damage. All this must be taken into account when choosing a material for a particular product.

For example, mink is a fairly easy material to work with. The fur has short elastic fibers, making it very convenient to carry out various manipulations.

Rabbit fur is also an affordable and pleasant material for making real fur pompoms. Yes, the fur is delicate and cannot be washed, but this is not a problem either. Below we will describe a way out of such a situation.

Cutting a blank from these types of fur is much easier than if you take long-haired material. You can even use scissors with round tips.

Preparing the skin for the pompom

So, you have decided to take on making a pompom yourself. When using old skins that have faded and lost color, you can simply dye them with regular hair dye.

Before doing this, clean the pile of dirt, otherwise the paint will not be absorbed evenly and you will get a poorly painted product with streaks and stains.

Let's wash the fur. To do this, prepare the following composition:

  • water - 1 l;
  • washing powder - 6 g;
  • ammonia - 7 ml;
  • salt and soda - 10 g each.

Dissolve all ingredients in water and carefully apply to the fur with a soft brush, leave for five minutes and rinse with plenty of water.

Now you can start painting. Be sure to apply the mixture to a small piece of fur to see what shade you get as a result.

Take a paint darker than the color of the fur itself, otherwise the result may be unpredictable. Let's say mink fur when lightened it gives an unpleasant yellow tint.

The flesh must first be treated with glycerin or thick cream- this will prevent the paint from drying out and damaging it.

Take your time, apply the coloring composition evenly to the entire surface of the pile. Follow the instructions included with the dye - the composition of animal hair is similar to human hair, so all processes proceed in the same way.

After curing the dye, rinse the fur in water, carefully washing away all particles of dye, and in order to consolidate the result, place it for a while in a weak vinegar solution. It is acceptable to apply balm or use conditioner.

After all water procedures, dry the fur piece by laying it on a soft towel. Do not use hair dryers or fans under any circumstances - the fur will become brittle!

How to make a fur pompom for a hat

That's all, you have prepared the fur, all that remains is to do the most important thing. Let's start making the pompom!

To get started, prepare a pattern - to do this, draw a circle of the required diameter on cardboard. It will be 5 cm larger than required for the pompom.

Now place the pattern on the inside and transfer it with a piece of chalk, soap, or a pen - it doesn’t matter, everything will remain inside the finished pom-pom.

When cutting, the size of the fur piece is very important - from a large piece it is much easier to cut out a circle of the required radius for a fur pompom. How to make it neat and beautiful will be described below.

Another important criterion is to determine how the pile is directed. If it is long, then this does not play a special role, but for short hairs it is important.

When cutting, use a scalpel or a stationery knife. It is advisable not to use scissors - you may damage the fur.

Having cut out the desired piece, sew it with large stitches along the edge. Do not make a knot at the end and do not secure the thread at the end. Next, by pulling these ends, you can tighten the part. To add volume, place a piece of prepared filler inside and finally tighten the thread. Tie the thread tightly and hide it inside the pompom.

All is ready. All that remains is to sew it onto a hat or scarf.

Fur products with long pile

Long pile makes work much easier on the one hand, but also brings its own difficulties on the other.

For example, the advantages are that it is not necessary to cut the pattern in the shape of a perfect circle - here everything will be hidden under the fur.

Be sure to cut with a scalpel or a special knife, since the blades of scissors can easily ruin the fibers. Cut on wood or plastic, avoiding damage to furniture.

It is better to tie a piece of filler with a ribbon in the color of the pompom - it will not allow it to get into the tightened thread.

After everything is tightened and tied with several knots, the tape can be removed. But sometimes it is left in order to attach the pompom to the required place.

Long fibers can get under the thread and get confused, and maybe even tear it. Check this very carefully - unattractively folded fur and protruding threads, even if the shade matches, look terribly sloppy!

Pompom made from fur scraps

It’s good when there is a large piece of fur, but what if there are only scraps, and even those are narrow or irregular in shape? How to make a fur pompom for a hat in this case?

If there are several small pieces, simply use furrier's stitches to sew them into a rectangular panel. Then, from it it will be possible to make a pompom using the technique described above.

A pom-pom from a strip of fur can be made as follows: roll it in a spiral and sew it, getting a round piece. The further course of events is the same as before.

Removable pompom

Such a fluffy one is completely indistinguishable from ordinary ones sewn to a hat or scarf. But such products are much easier to maintain. After all, it is much more convenient to simply unfasten the fur, wash the item, and then fasten it again. There is no need for constant sewing and cutting.

The only thing important rule here - the button must match the pompom. It should not be visible, but it should also hold it very well. Otherwise, you will simply lose your pompom on a windy day.

How to make such an accessory? Simply and easily! The pompom is created in the same way as described earlier, and the button is unfastened and one half of it is attached to the hat, and the other to the pompom.

Faux fur pom poms

This product has a not so rich appearance, but such pompoms are also in great demand. Working with faux fur is much easier, and it is also more affordable. Even machine washable.

You act similarly to the description suitable for natural fur. To cut, take scissors and cut with the very tips, avoiding touching the pile.

The thread is not the strongest, but ordinary thread is enough for sewing.

Washing together with the product is acceptable, because of this, artificial parts are sewn directly to it.
