A pompom is an addition (or sometimes a complete part of an item) to an item. Surely everyone had hats with pom-poms or mittens or scarves in childhood. They were made from yarn. Nowadays, pompoms are used not only as an addition to clothing. Needlewomen knit blankets (plaids) from them, decorate socks, make accessories (earrings, etc.), add them to handbags and still use them to decorate clothes. You can make a pompom from yarn with your own hands.

What you need to make a pompom

To make a pompom from yarn, you will need:

1. Yarn (of any thickness and any color, depending on what size of the finished pompom is needed and what color);
2. Scissors;
3. Cardboard (an ordinary piece of A4 cardboard of any color will do);
4. Fork (metal);
5. Table.

Making a pompom (method No. 1)

The easiest way to make pompoms is the method without using improvised materials (you only need yarn and scissors). The basis for the pompom in this method is the human hand, or rather, her hand and fingers.

The fingers of the hand must be moved close to each other; we take the yarn and wrap it around the fingers. Depending on the size of the pompom a person needs, we select the width of the yarn winding (the larger the size needed, the wider we wind). Once the required amount of yarn (the size of the pompom also depends on it) is on your hand, remove it and tie it lengthwise with the remaining tip of the thread. We cut one of the resulting parts (you get a large loop of several layers of yarn), straighten it with your hands, then do the same with the second, the pompom is ready. Finally, it is recommended to tie the separation of the two pompom parts tightly.

How to make a large pompom from yarn (method No. 2)

Large pom-poms are usually made for knitting blankets and bed linen (bedspreads, duvet covers, pillowcases, etc.). Interior items are soft and cozy.

To make a large pompom you need: a table, yarn, scissors. The table can be replaced with a chair, but then the size of the pompom will be smaller.

We turn the table upside down and wrap the two adjacent legs with yarn (in thick layers if a fluffy, large pom-pom is needed). Having finished wrapping, carefully remove the resulting workpiece and pull its middle with the remaining end of the yarn (we recommend leaving it longer). Using scissors, cut each side (from the loops). Straighten the yarn evenly with your hands. As a result, using a chair/table, we get a finished pompom.

How to make a small pompom from yarn (method of making pompoms No. 3)

A small pompom can be made using a kitchen utensil - a fork (as well as yarn, scissors).

We take an ordinary fork (it should be made of metal, a plastic one will not work, the tines will easily bend and break), and stretch a yarn measuring fifteen centimeters in the middle between the tines. Having fixed the thread, we begin to wrap the fork in the same way as in methods No. 1 and No. 2. You need to stop winding when there are two ends of yarn left, two to three centimeters each. Next, we tie the resulting shape in the middle, cut both parts and straighten it with our hands. The pompom is ready.

Small pom-poms can be used as accessories for handbags (in the form of key chains), jewelry (to make earrings out of them), decoration of clothes, blankets, and bed linen.

How to make a yarn pom pom using cardboard

It is also possible to make a pompom using cardboard. Ideally, this should be cardboard for children's creativity; it is more suitable in thickness and rigidity. However, you can also use ordinary pieces of cardboard from a box. We cut out two squares or two circles from it, connect them, start winding the yarn in the middle, then remove the threads from the cardboard and tie them in the middle, as we did in the previous methods. Finally, we cut the resulting loops, straighten them into a hand-made piece, and you get a pom-pom. Its size will depend on the size of the cardboard figure and the amount of yarn.

Thus, we looked at a variety of ways to make pompoms from yarn. Each of them is practical for a specific purpose. The simplest of them is a method of making pom-poms from yarn without using improvised materials (that is, the blank is made on a person’s hand). Pompom blankets have become especially popular due to their original and cozy appearance. They are made both from calm bed shades of yarn and from iridescent, bright ones. Plaid attracts appearance and its characteristics: softness, warmth. It is made from many pom-poms connected with yarn. Depending on the desired size, the required number of pompoms is used.

Instructions

There are several ways to make a yarn pompom. They differ only in their basis. Yarn will be wound around it in the future. You can create patterns or a base yourself, having only a piece of cardboard and scissors on hand. To do this, cut out either two identical rings, or two identical horseshoes, or two squares.

Classic way consists of making a pompom on a round pattern. To do this, first decide on the size of the pompom. As a rule, pompoms with a diameter of more than 9 cm are used for hats.

Having chosen the required size, cut out two circles of the same diameter. Now cut another circle in the center inside. Make sure it is not very narrow. You will need to pass a skein of yarn through it. For convenience, you can make a slot in the rings. Then you will get a pattern in the shape of a horseshoe. The difference in making a pompom on different patterns is only in the next step.

Cut the yarn about 40cm long. Fold it in half and thread the end through the beginning to create something like a loop. Do not tighten it, but place it between two rings so that it is completely covered by the circles. The end of the loop must be freely accessible. If you are making a pompom on a horseshoe-shaped pattern, then move this step to the moment when you cut the twisted yarn. Or you can not make a loop, but simply put the thread between the horseshoes so that its ends hang freely along the two edges of the pattern.

Start winding the yarn around the rings. The more you wrap, the fluffier the pompom will be. Watch the thread tension. Don't let it be too tight. The yarn should lie tightly and evenly throughout the circle. Do not accidentally wrap the end of the loop that we placed inside the circle.

When you have wound the required amount of yarn, grab it firmly with one hand. With your other hand, take the scissors and start cutting so that the bottom blade of the scissors passes between the two rings. But be careful not to cut the thread between the rings.

When you have cut all the yarn with scissors, gently pull the end of the loop. It will begin to pull together loose and already cut strips of yarn.

When you have tightened the loop as much as possible, remove the rings from the pom pom. Make a few turns of one end of the loop and, pulling it tightly, tie several knots.

In fact, pom-poms (buboes) made from yarn are not only a decorative addition to knitted hat. Buboes different forms, sizes and colors, you can decorate scarves, stoles, socks, knitted slippers, footwear and sweaters. We offer you several step by step instructions how to make beautiful pompoms from yarn different ways and with a minimum of equipment.

In order to make such a bubo, you only need yarn and scissors.

1. Wrap the thread in a fairly thick layer around the four fingers of your left hand (refer to the photo).
2. Carefully remove the wrap from your left hand.
3. Holding it in the middle with your fingers, measure 20-25 cm of thread and cut it with scissors from the ball.
4. Wrap this thread around the middle of the coil several times and tie it in a knot with a chain loop.
5. You now have two loops that need to be cut in the middle with scissors.
6. Now fluff the ends of the threads to make a ball.

The larger the winding, the fluffier and more voluminous your ball will be.

How to make a fluffy pompom from yarn

This manufacturing option is a classic, and additional devices are required for it.

1. Cut out two rings 2-2.5 cm wide from thin cardboard.
2. Prepare cutting threads up to 1 meter.
3. Using your finger, secure the tip of the thread to the cardboard rings taken together and wrap it around the entire circumference of the cardboard. Make the winding dense and multi-layered, as in the photo.
4. Cut all the threads along the outer end of the ring.
5. Tie an additional thread up to 1 meter in length into a knot between two cardboard rings, and then remove them.
6. Fluff the ends of the threads with your hands and form a ball.

How to quickly make small pompoms from yarn on a fork

Believe it or not, using a fork you can make very small buboes in a matter of minutes.

1. Wrap the thread around the tines of the fork in a thick layer.
2. Using another piece of thread, tie a knot between the second and third cloves.
3. Remove the winding from the fork and cut the loops formed on both sides in half.
4. Fluff the ends of the yarn and form a ball.

And with this method you can form curly buboes with a pattern. First, try making it in the shape of a lemon.

1. Make two blanks in the shape of a horseshoe from cardboard.
2. Use white and yellow yarn, as well as the winding pattern in the photo.
3. Cut the threads along the end of the winding and tie a knot on the bottom fold of the winding with additional thread.
4. Now you can remove the cardboard blanks and fluff the threads.

• suitable threads;
• needle with a large eye;
• small scissors (can be manicure scissors).

Operating procedure:

On a sheet of white cardboard, using a compass, draw two identical circles of the desired diameter. Draw another small circle in the center of each. Cut out both pieces. If you don’t have a compass at home, you can use improvised objects (cups, saucers, lids, etc.).

Then make a loop from a piece of thread and place it on top of one of the parts, cover it with a second cardboard circle, aligning their edges.

Thread long thread into the needle and start wrapping it around both circles together, holding the templates with your hand so that the loop clamped inside them does not slip out. The more layers of thread you wind, the more magnificent and dense the pompom will be.

When the templates are completely wrapped, use nail scissors to cut the threads along the outer edge, after which, slightly spreading the circles to the sides, tie the thread tightly in the middle so that the pompom does not fall apart. Only after this can the templates be removed.

Second way. Wrap the thread around your fingers.

This method is the fastest. It will come in handy when you don’t have any auxiliary tools on hand to make a pom-pom.

Take a ball and wind several turns of thread around the four fingers of your hand. Then tie a bunch of threads in the middle without removing them from your fingers. The inconvenience of this method is that without outside help it is problematic to tightly tie the threads wound around your hand.

Third way. Using the back of a chair.

This method is good when you need a short time make a lot of pompoms. Its essence is that first a “sausage” is made from threads, which is then cut into pieces.

You can do this as follows.

Wind the threads around the back of the chair, carefully remove it and tie the resulting thread “sausage” with pieces of thread in several places at the same distance. Then, in the spaces between the bundles in the center, cut the threads with scissors and get a lot of pompoms.

Or wrap the threads around thin legs chair, make the required number of dressings, and only then remove and cut.

Fourth way. Make pompoms using a fork.

It is suitable for making small pompoms.

• wrap two table legs with thread;
• try to wind the thread in one circle;

• step back a couple of centimeters, tie the strand again; repeat the procedure around the entire yarn; remove the tied strand;
• in the middle of two windings, cut the threads;
• complete the procedure to the end; Fluff the resulting lumps and smooth them out.

Pay attention to the following little things. The thicker the table legs, the more convenient it is to re-tighten the wrapped strand. The shorter the distance between the constrictions, the smaller the pompoms. If you need elastic balls, then take thick threads and tie the winding tightly.

How to make small yarn pompoms quickly with a fork

When you need miniature pompoms for panels, crafts, New Year's wreaths, then you will need forks. It is more convenient to make a ball on a large kitchen fork, since the middle is empty. In this case, you get balls with a diameter of three to four centimeters.

How to quickly make a pompom from yarn on a table fork:

• Step back ten to fifteen centimeters from the edge of the thread.
• Wind the threads around the fork, being careful not to move the strand.
• Cut the thread from the ball.
• Next, cross the two ends of the winding, wind it tightly in the middle, and tie it in a knot.
