Mother's Day has long been celebrated in many countries around the world. Holiday . The ancient Greeks worshiped the mother of all gods, Gaia; the Romans dedicated three days in March (from 22 to 25) to the mother of the gods, Cybele. For the Celts, Mother's Day was a day to honor the goddess Bridget.

From the 17th to the 19th centuries in Great Britain, Mothering Sunday was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In those days, most poor people were forced to live in the homes of their employers, since they most often worked away from home and family. On Mothering Sunday, such workers were given a day of rest so that they could visit their mothers and spend this day with them. Gradually this date began to take on a different meaning. The holidays Mother's Day of the Church and Mothering Sunday were combined into one.

One of the founders modern day American women's activist Julia Ward Howe is believed to be the mother. In 1870, she published the Mother's Day Proclamation, calling on "all women who have hearts" to fight for peace. Every year in honor of Mother's Day in Boston, she organized mass rallies. However, Julia's idea did not find universal support, since she positioned Mother's Day only in the context of the struggle for world peace.

In May 1907, American teacher Ann Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, organized a ceremony in memory of her deceased mother, also named Ann Jarvis. In 1908, the holiday in honor of the mother was already celebrated by hundreds of women with their children. And in 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated in all states of America, as well as Mexico, Canada, China, Japan, South America and Africa. On December 12, 1912, the International Mother's Day Association was formed to promote the celebration of this day.

In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson legalized the national holiday Mother's Day, which was set on the second Sunday in May.
The church in Grafton, where the first Mother's Day ceremony was held, received the status of Mother's Day Shrine in 1962.
On Mother's Day, it is customary to visit your mother and present symbolic gift. In America, the carnation flower is traditionally worn on Mother's Day: a colored carnation is pinned in honor of a living mother, and a white carnation is pinned in memory of a departed mother.
According to sociological surveys, this day ranks fifth in the ranking of the most favorite holidays, ahead only of Christmas, Easter, Father's Day and Valentine's Day. The tradition of returning to your father’s roof on this day and spending the holiday next to your mothers is still sacredly revered to this day.

In addition to the United States, on the second Sunday of May, Mother's Day is celebrated in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Malta, Turkey, Ukraine, Finland, Estonia, and Japan.

In Australia, on Mother's Day, the morning begins with breakfast, which children lovingly prepare for their mothers. On this day, mothers are given flowers, gifts and cards.

The second Sunday in May is also Mother's Day in countries such as Germany and Switzerland. Switzerland was one of the first European countries to introduce Mother's Day (1917). In Germany, Mother's Day was declared official holiday in 1933. After World War II, this holiday began to be celebrated similarly to Mother's Day in the United States - mothers are given flowers and gifts.

In modern Germany, on the eve of this day there is a great stir in flower shops. On this day, it is also customary for the Germans to send postcards with poems dedicated to mothers.

This holiday is celebrated on the last Sunday in May in Sweden and France, and on the first Sunday in May in South Africa.

In Greece, Mother's Day is celebrated on May 9th. In Bahrain, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, Mother's Day is celebrated on May 10th.

In May, when Mother Nature dresses her Daughter Earth in a lush attire of spring flowers on the journey of life, work and joy, people express gratitude to maternal self-sacrifice and celebrate Mother's Day. Mothers Day - international holiday in honor of mothers. On this day it is customary to congratulate mothers and pregnant women, unlike the International women's day when all female representatives accept congratulations.

Mother's Day is a great holiday,
He brings us joy and light,
Indeed, in a series of different phenomena
There is no friend more reliable than your mother.

She is always by your side
Whether you are at home or far away.
Will warm you with a warm, gentle look,
And your soul will feel lighter.

Thank you, dear mothers,
Why are you constantly waiting for us?
It's so good that you are like this
Live long, good luck!

Honoring a woman-mother has a long history.

The holiday comes from the ancient Greek cult of the mother. Official mysteries with rites in honor of Cybele, or Rhea, the Great Mother of the Gods, were held on the Ides of March throughout Asia Minor (Encyclopædia Britannica. 1959. Vol. 15. P. 849).

Mothering Sunday and Mother's Day are two different things.
From the 17th to the 19th centuries, the so-called “Mothering Sunday” was celebrated in Great Britain - on the second (or, according to other sources, fourth) Sunday of Lent, dedicated to honoring mothers throughout the country. You couldn’t work on this day; you had to visit your parents.

In the United States, Mother's Day was first publicly supported by the famous American pacifist, as well as the poet who wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" in 1862, during the American Civil War, and the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Julia Ward Howe in 1872. “Mother's Day” according to Julia Ward is a day of unity of mothers in the fight for world peace. Calling for the day to be dedicated to peace, Howe organized massive Mother's Day rallies in Boston every year. However, Julia Ward's concept did not find widespread support either in the United States or in other countries.
Anna Marie Jarvis
The history of modern Mother's Day is as follows. In 1907, American Anna Maria Jarvis (born 1864 in Webster, West Virginia) launched an initiative to honor mothers in memory of her mother, Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis, a prominent American Civil War activist whom she lost in 1905. Jarvis was so carried away by her idea that she was not afraid to defend the need to create a holiday in front of the highest officials of the country. She wrote letters to government agencies, legislatures, and prominent individuals proposing that one day a year be dedicated to honoring mothers, and she personally went and persuaded state governor after state governor to vote for Mother's Day. In 1910, Virginia was the first state to recognize Mother's Day as an official holiday. In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution to declare the second Sunday in May national holiday in honor of all American mothers, with a special caveat - this day did not honor women and their social or political work, but mothers in their domestic and family functions.

Ironically, Anna Jarvis had no children and was never married. Gossips they said that she had no time left for this - she was too busy fighting for her brainchild - Mother's Day. It is known that after 40 years Anna quit her job and organized “Mother’s Day International Association”, devoting all of herself and all her time to this. She devoted all her strength to fighting what her holiday was turning into - Anna was I am sure that Mother's Day should never have been part of a money making machine. They said that Anna Jarvis died in poverty (1948, West Chester, Pennsylvania), and after her death there was a lot of confusion in her affairs - she. was an excellent fighter, but was not a good manager. Be that as it may, it was Anna Jarvis who came up with and implemented the idea of celebrating Mother's Day in the USA, and she did it out of love and in memory of her mother.

Following the United States, the following countries declared the second Sunday of May a holiday: Australia, Austria, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Bahrain, Belgium, Belize, Bermuda, Bhutan, Boner, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei, Vietnam , Venezuela, Ghana, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, Hong Kong, Denmark, Dominica, Zambia, Zimbabwe, India, Iceland, Italy, Cambodia, Canada, Qatar, Kenya, Cyprus, China (China), Colombia, Cuba, Curacao, Latvia, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Macau, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Myanmar, Namibia, Netherlands, Nicaragua, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Singapore, Sint Maarten, Slovakia, Suriname, Taiwan, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, Fiji, Philippines , Finland, Croatia, Czech Republic, Chile, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Estonia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Jamaica, Japan.

In Ukraine, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, which is considered the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which occupies a leading place in the religious consciousness of Ukrainians. This is due to mentality and social system. For a long time, princes asked her for intercession and gave honor and praise to the Virgin Mary for victory in battles. The Mother of God also became the guardian of the knights of the Ukrainian spirit - the Cossacks. Among the Ukrainian community, Mother's Day was first organized by the Ukrainian Women's Union of Canada in 1928. The following year, this holiday was celebrated in Lviv. The initiator of the celebrations was Elena Kiselevskaya, editor of the weekly magazine “Women’s Share”. Also, in 1929, the “Union of Ukrainian Women” initiated the organization of this holiday in the Ternopil region. Organizations “Prosvita”, “Native School”, “Plast”, “Sokol” and others organized concerts, conferences, and festivals throughout Eastern Galicia. Since then, Mother's Day has been celebrated very widely. However, in 1939 the holiday was banned by the Soviet government. Since 1990, thanks to the efforts of public organizations, in particular the Union of Ukrainian Women, Mother's Day has returned to Ukraine. During the times of independent Ukraine, the holiday was established “... in support of the initiative State Committee Ukraine for Family and Youth Affairs, the international organization "Women's Society", the Women's Union of Ukraine, the public organization "Union of Ukrainian Women..." in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine "On Mother's Day" dated May 10, 1999 No. 489/99. It is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May.
Emperor Hirohito and Empress Kojun, 1956
In Japan, the first Mother's Day celebration took place on March 6, 1931, on the occasion of the birthday of Empress Kojun. The initiator of the holiday was the Great Japan Women's Association. On May 8, 1937, the Morinaga confectionery company held a Mother's Day festival in Tokyo. However, the celebration of this holiday did not catch on. After Japan's defeat in World War II, starting in 1949, under the influence American traditions, the Japanese began to celebrate Mother's Day annually, every second Sunday in May. On this day, it is customary to congratulate mothers and give them carnations. By the way, in the USA and Australia there is a tradition of wearing a carnation flower on clothes on this day. Moreover, color matters, so a colored carnation indicates that a person’s mother is alive, and white flowers are pinned to clothes in memory of departed mothers.

Mother's Day cookies
In Australia, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, but it is neither a public nor an official holiday. The tradition of giving gifts to mothers on Mother's Day in Australia was started in 1924 by Mrs Janet Hayden, a resident of Lyckardt Sydney. She started this tradition while visiting a patient at the Newington State Home for Women, where she met many single and forgotten women. To encourage them, she collected donations from local schoolchildren and businesses to purchase and give gifts to these women. After that, every year Mrs. Hayden collected many donations from local businesses, and even from the local mayor. Much later, Mother's Day became a source of income. Traditionally, mothers are given chrysanthemums on this day, a common autumn flower whose English name, chrysanthemum, ends in mum, which is how mothers are commonly called in Australia.

However, it is no secret that today Jarvis would hardly be happy with the way the holiday she invented became. After all, she wanted mothers to be congratulated on this day warmly, at home, certainly with homemade gifts and handwritten letters. It is known that Jarvis fought in every possible way against the commercialization of Mother’s Day - she was against soulless cards with ready-made tests, against ready-made gifts, believing that it is they who take away the warmth of this holiday. Be that as it may, time dictates its own rules, and modern Mother’s Day has already become part of the industry, and Anna could not do anything about it. Be that as it may, this holiday is considered very significant, and, even being somewhat commercialized, it still gives people a reason to remember their mothers once again.

Bonus. HOW DID THE WORD "MOM" APPEAR?

In linguistics, the concept of “mom and dad” refers to the sequence of sounds /ma/, /mama/ and the like, which in many, often completely unrelated languages, correspond to the words “mother” and “father”.

It is believed that the word MOTHER belongs to the group of words that appeared even before people developed articulate speech. These words come from children's babble and denote the most important concepts for every person. Such concepts include, first of all, terms of kinship. The syllable "ma" is the simplest that a baby can pronounce. And the word MOM came, as is believed, from the repetition of this syllable. After all, mom was the main person in the baby’s life in primitive times; he spent all the time with her, at her breast, while dad hunted and protected the family from enemies.

“Mama” is the first word of a person who has just come into the world. Perhaps it was the first word of all humanity. Perhaps our language began with him and similar “childish” words in ancient times.

From other simple syllables that a child learns to pronounce first, concepts also emerged that denote immediate relatives: pa-pa, dyad-dya, cha-cha, ba-ba.

Family ties are the most significant at all times, and the development of speech in children proceeds, in general, in a similar way. Therefore, it is not surprising that in the vast majority of languages, the most important words for every person sound similar. Russian children call their mother “mama”, little French children call them “maman”, German children call them “mama”, English children call them “mamma”, Chinese children call them “mama”, Korean children call them “omma”.

But if you think that the word “mother” everywhere and everywhere, among all peoples of the world means “mother” in the mouths of babies, then you are mistaken! Among Georgians, for example, the word “mama” does not mean “mother” at all, but just the opposite - “father”! And Georgian children call their mother “grandfather.” But the interesting thing is that the word for mother in all languages consists of two identical syllables.

Indo-European languages

  • In the Russian language there are the words mom, dad, grandfather and baba (deda - only in children's speech).
  • Italian mamma, Romanian mama, Spanish mamá and Portuguese mamãe. In Latin, to which these languages go back, there were the words mater and pater.
  • IN English language There is a tendency to use open vowels [ɑ] and [ɐ] in mama/momma and mum/mom.
  • In Dutch, mama and papa are also the most common ways a child addresses his or her parents.
  • In Armenian, մայր is mother; հայր - father; պապ - grandfather; տատ - grandmother. Children more often turn to their parents: մամա for mother and պապա for father.
  • Due to their widespread use, mama and papa have been adopted into Interlingua.
Non-Indo-European languages
  • The Georgian language is notable for the fact that in it words of similar form have the opposite meaning compared to other languages: “father” will be მამა mama, while “mother” will be დედა deda.
  • In Chinese, the words for "mother" are ma, mama, mu and nian. Dad will be ba, baba (the Chinese “b” is not sonorous and is close to the “p” without aspiration), fu or de.
  • Ma is used to refer to mother in the isolated North American language Kutenai, spoken in southeastern British Columbia.
  • In Japanese, the basic words meaning "mother" and "father" that are not combined with honoratives are haha and titi, which are undoubtedly derived from Proto-Old Japanese *papa and *titi (Modern Japanese /h/ goes back to the labial fricative [ ɸ], which, in turn, is a form of the older *n). Along with native terms, borrowings function in Japanese: mom and dad, which have an informal connotation. Common words for naming strangers' mother and father, as well as politely addressing own parents, are the Sinicisms o-ka:-san and o-to:-san. These words are considered polite.
  • In Thai, "mother" is me3e (long e with a glottalized falling tone) and "father" is pho3o (aspirated /pʰ/).
  • In Tagalog, a language belonging to the Austronesian family of languages, mothers are called nánay or ináy (a diminutive of iná "mother") and fathers are called tátay (the opposite, a form unrelated to amá "father"). Due to contact with Spanish and English, mamá, papá, ma(m(i)), and dad or dádi are also used.
  • In Quechua and Aymara, mama means "mother". “Father” in Aymara is tata, and in Quechua it is tayta.
There are several theories about this. One version says that before Babylon there was still a certain proto-Indo-European language, which hypothetically could be the progenitor of all the languages that we have now. Thus, it is likely that some words - or in this case at least one - could retain the same meaning in all the dialects that emerged. In Sanskrit "mother" was matar, in Latin - mater. Now we see how similar the two languages are in this, which are documented to have given rise to so many other languages.

In addition, in ancient Hebrew the prefix “mi” or “mai” meant “from someone,” that is, origin. Thus, calling a woman a mother would indicate, first of all, that the child came from her, which is quite logical. In Old English, ma simply means “breast,” which also does not go far from the key characteristics of the mother as a nurse. Mamma is now the official medical term in English for breasts, hence mammologists (doctors who treat breast conditions in women).

The reason for this interesting cross-linguistic phenomenon is considered to be the ease of pronunciation of the sounds used. Research has shown that children learning to speak practice the open vowel sound [a] and labial consonants (most commonly [p], [b], and [m]). There are practically no languages that lack labial consonants, and an open vowel like [a] is present in all languages without exception. The Tagalog syllables -na-/-ta- mama/papa are parallel to the more popular ma/pa in consonant nasality/orality and coincide in place of articulation. There are, however, deviations from this rule.

The concepts of motherhood and fatherhood as such are in no way connected with sounds. The striking cross-linguistic similarity between these terms is considered to be a result of the nature of language acquisition (Jakobson, 1962). According to Jacobson, these words are the first word-like sounds that babbling babies make. Parents tend to associate children's first sounds with themselves.

According to another version, “ma” is just a sound that children make when they smack their lips when they drink breast milk. That is, it is possible that when they say “mom,” children are actually just asking for more food. If you follow this theory, it turns out that women have appropriated to themselves the child’s first word and the right to be called a mother. Some kind of bad theory, incorrect. And in general, in some languages (for example, in Tagalog, the main language of the Philippines), the same sound “ma” is included in the word “dad”, but here it is more difficult to explain the connection to breast milk.

It is also interesting that approximately 40% of languages have the letter “n” in the word “mother”. In Turkish it is anne, in Hungarian anya, the Eskimos call their mother ananak, the Aztecs call it nan, and in Fiji it is nana. A baby cannot make this sound when crying or feeding, so the latter theory lost even more points.

It is interesting that the full literary names in different languages have more differences, but the short versions, those that children use, are increasingly closer to each other. English mother, French mère, Italian madre, Russian “mother” - and if we put decency aside, then the British mum, American mom and Irish mam immediately appear, almost indistinguishable from each other. In colloquial French it is maman, in Italian it is the famous mamma, and in Russian it is “mama”.

Therefore, there is no reason to attribute the existing similarities between words to a common origin. Basic kinship terms mom and dad can often be "false friends" - unrelated words that are the same in different languages (e.g. khung ba, Hebrew aba, Chinese papa, Persian baba, and French papa (all meaning "father"), Hausa "baba"; or Navajo ma, Chinese māma, Swahili mama, Quechua mama, English mama).

In Japanese the original baby mom interpreted as "food". The ancient Romans used the word "mamma" to describe the breasts of a woman feeding a child with milk. By the way, this is why in zoology the class of mammals is called the Latin word “Mammalia”. In some Spanish dialects, papa is also used in this sense in children's speech, and buba or pupa means “pain” (compare with Russian “bo-bo” or English boo-boo). These concepts are the first ones that children strive to pass on to their parents. In terms of this idea, we can also consider English poo (poop) and pee (pee), not to mention English baby, Spanish bebé and Quechua wawa (child), all of which are characterized by a simple syllabic structure and labial consonants.

In addition, psycholinguistic experiments have shown that the newborn’s brain responds best to the sound of words with repeated adjacent syllables (for example, pseudowords like mubaba, penana), but not to words with different syllables (such as mubage, penaku) or words without adjacent repetition identical syllables (bamuba, napena).

In Russian mother, in Georgian nana,
And in Avar - affectionately baba.
From thousands of words of earth and ocean
This one has a special destiny.

Our lullaby becoming the first word of the year,
It sometimes entered a smoky circle
And on the lips of a soldier in the hour of death
The last call suddenly became.

There are no shadows on this word,
And in silence, probably because
Other words, kneeling,
They want to confess to him.

The spring, having rendered a service to the jug,
This word babbles because
What a mountain peak remembers -
She was known as his mother.

And lightning will cut through the cloud again,
And I will hear, following the rain,
How, absorbed into the ground, this word
Raindrops are calling.

I’ll sigh secretly, grieving about something,
And, hiding a tear in the clear light of day:
Don’t worry, I tell my mom,
Everything is fine, my dear.

Constantly worries about his son
Holy love is a great slave.
In Russian mother, in Georgian nana
And in Avar - affectionately baba.

Secondary educational institutions supported the Baku tradition. A few years later it grew into a nationwide one.

The first word we speak. The person we call when we feel bad and when we feel good. The person with whom we first share all our secrets. The person who will forever remain our first and main love. Mom, Mommy, Mommy. A woman who protects us from adversity every minute. A woman who, even leaving for another world, like a guardian angel, invisibly watching us from Heaven, blesses and guides us on the true path...

Without a doubt, International Mother's Day is a holiday for every person on Earth. After all, each of us has a Mommy, Mommy, Mom, to whom we owe our lives.

Cult of the Mother in Ancient Greece and Rus'

International Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The month of May was not chosen by chance. IN Ancient Greece reigned the cult of worship of the Great Mother of all Gods, Rhea, in whose honor every year at the beginning of May mysteries were held, including many complex rituals and ceremonies. A little later, celebrations began to be held in Greece in honor of other goddesses who were considered the mothers of the Earth and all humanity - Demeter and Persephone.

Solemn ceremonies dedicated to the cult of the Mother were carried out in Rus' back in the days of paganism. The image of the Most Holy Mother of God in Christianity is also a tribute to the great role played by women in the centuries-old history of mankind.

history of the holiday

The history of International Mother's Day dates back to the 19th century. In 1872, in the United States, the famous pacifist and women's rights activist Julia Howe took the initiative to hold International Day unity of all mothers of the planet. Unfortunately, at that time this great idea did not find worthy support. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the holiday was celebrated unofficially only in the United States.

In 1907, another American, Anna Jarvis, introduced a proposal to the legislature to establish National Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. This time the initiative was supported at the highest state level. In 1914, the holiday finally received official status.

Since many other countries joined the American celebrations literally within a few years, May 2 very quickly acquired an international dimension. Today, International Mother's Day is officially celebrated in more than 23 countries around the world.

Holiday traditions

In the USA and many European countries, there is a tradition of attaching a red carnation flower to clothes if the mother is alive, and a white one if she has already left this world. In America, also on this day, they always visit their parents, no matter how far away they live. And mothers prepare various delicacies for their already adult children, pampering them no less than in distant childhood.

Everything on this day is for our dear mothers. Flowers, gifts, congratulations, words of gratitude and admiration. However, our mothers deserve all this not only on holiday. Appreciate your mother, confess your love to her every day, give gifts and flowers for no reason, simply because she IS. And may International Mother's Day continue 365 days a year!
