So when she knitted the sample, and then I calculated the stitches for knitting the hat using it and started knitting, then the hat was bigger size than we needed.

3. For a three-year-old child, head volume is 52-50 cm.
To knit, you need to cast on loops for the volume of your head minus 2 cm - for the tightness of the cap.
For the calculation, I took 50 cm - the volume of the head.

4. For the sample, I cast on 20 stitches on circular needles. A pink hat I knitted on 5 double needles. knitted 15 rows in height, which corresponds to 6cm. Then I measured the length of the sample in 20 loops - it turned out to be 12 cm.

I cast on 82-84 stitches for the red hat.

I knitted a pink hat on 5 knitting needles. I knitted the red hat on circular knitting needles and both with a seam on the head.

Because I think that this way the hat fits better on the head and can be sewn in if necessary.

How to make a drawing diagram of a product?

I took a checkered sheet of paper and a felt-tip pen and started drawing. I know that I need 9 cm for the width of the ears, 12 cm for the back of the cap. If the entire volume of the head is 50 cm, then 20 cm remains for the front of the cap.

5. In addition to the sample, I always make a drawing of the product to make it easier to knit and more visual. I never use calculated loops indicated in a book or magazine. Since the yarn is different, the thickness of the knitting needles may be different for me than indicated in the magazine, and each knitting density is different for each craftsman. Therefore, it’s easier for me to calculate everything myself using my own model. It will be more accurate and faster. And I recommend that you do the same.

6. So, from the drawing you can see that I need 9 cm in length for the ears, which corresponds to 15 loops according to my sample; on the back of the head only 12 cm: 6 cm to the left and right of the seam. Which corresponds to 10 loops to the left and right of the seam.

On the forehead, or front part of the cap, 20 cm remains, which corresponds to 34 loops.

It’s clear what comes from where? These distances and sizes are a matter of taste.

7. I started knitting from the left eyelet with three loops in garter stitch, adding one loop to the right and left after the edge stitch in each row, or you can do it every other row. I made sure that the height of the ear was approximately 6 cm and 15 loops wide (horizontally).

Always check your theoretical calculations with what you get when knitting. There may be errors.

Get your bearings in time so that you don’t have to bandage the entire product later.

When I knitted the left ear about 6 cm high and 9 cm long or 15 loops on the front side to the left, I cast on 15 loops on the back of the head (left) and left this knitting. You can break the thread, leaving 5 cm, so you can hem it later.

8. I start knitting the right ear in the same way. I cast on 3 loops, leaving the end of the thread about 30-35 cm for tying.

(Since I made the ties using the macrame technique. But this is not important. You can make the ties with a crochet or other method.)

After I have 15 loops on the right eyelet on the knitting needle, and the thread is on the right, I cast on an additional 10-12 loops on the back of the hat along the front row. Then I turn the knitting to the wrong side and knit a purl row.

9. To ensure that when casting on additional loops (for the front part of the cap and the back of the head), the first row (edge ​​of the cap) does not twist upward, make sure that the additional loops are cast on the front row. That is, on the front side I did this: I knitted the left ear - 15 loops, cast on an additional 10 loops on the front side for the back of the hat and left knitting. Then I knitted the right ear, along the front side from left to right (that is, on the same knitting needle) I cast on an additional 10 loops for the back of the cap.

Having knitted the front row of the right ear, I cast on an additional 34 loops for the front part of the hat on the third knitting needle. See the diagram. And she attached the left ear, continuing to knit with facial loops along the front side. Then, I turned the knitting and knitted all 82-84 loops on the wrong side with purl loops.

10. I knit in garter stitch with a height of 11-13 cm. It’s a matter of taste.

When I knitted 11 cm in height, I started decreasing.

11. Decrease stitches every 10 stitches, knitting two together, on each knit row. It turned out to be 8 decreases. I made decreases in the same place. But you can decrease the loops in different places. I reduced both caps in different ways.

12. When there were 8-6 loops left on the knitting needles, I transferred all the loops onto circular knitting needles, closed the row, pulled them into a circle and left a thread from the ball of such length that it could be used to make a seam.

13. To sew a seam at the back of the hat, I took a hook and sewed a seam. You can sew it with a needle.

14. Ties.

In the first hat (pink), I wove a chain of square knots - it turned out to be a ribbon. And in the second (red) hat, I made the cord with a Chinese “lotus” knot.

15. Pompon. I made a pompom from the same threads that I knitted the hat and sewed it on. It turned out beautiful!!! We haven't even finished decorating the hat yet!! But we will definitely do it!

If you want to make a hat with ears more open on the side of the face, then accordingly increase the number of loops from 34 to the required length, then the width of the ear will decrease from 15 loops to the width you need.
