This is not even a superstition anymore, it’s something more - I would call it a tradition... Well, it’s a business, of course, but who will do it and when (everyone has work, things to do)? It would seem that the answer is obvious: “Of course, husband, relatives...!” But there is so little time to “work out the dowry” for the future baby: after all, if everything is fine with the mother and baby, they end up at home already on the fifth day after giving birth. Accordingly, there are only a few days left to purchase everything you need.

Moreover, in a hurry, relatives and friends will buy things according to their taste, in accordance with their ideas about their functionality, and who can guarantee that they will coincide with the views and preferences of the young mother? But mother and baby will have to use all these strollers, cribs, and diapers every day, so a careful choice, to put it mildly, will not hurt. The list of hygiene products that a child will need in the first days of life includes:

Many doctors recommend alternating bathing a child with detergents and bathing with herbs. Chamomile and chamomile are very suitable for this purpose. It should be borne in mind that some herbs should not be used without medical indications. For example, for some skin diseases, baths with celandine are used, but healthy child such a bath more than once a week is contraindicated. The same applies to herbs with a relaxing and tonic effect.

A child will need at least two baby creams: a moisturizer and a diaper cream (usually with talcum powder). It is advisable to buy a couple of tubes (jars) of both creams from different manufacturers, so that the mother has the opportunity to choose a cream that is suitable specifically for her baby. To care for the skin of a newborn, baby balm or oil is also useful (after a bath and during a massage), but some children can do without it.

Wet wipes make life so much easier: when changing a diaper, you can avoid going to the bath and simply wipe your baby’s bottom with a wipe soaked in baby oil or lotion, which cleanses and moisturizes your baby’s skin at the same time. Wipes with lotion are also useful outside the home (in the clinic, on the road, etc.) - and not only for the baby: the mother can use them to wipe her hands if there is no way to wash them. In the future, when you decide on napkins of a certain brand, you can only buy removable blocks in a plastic box.

An alternative to wet wipes is cotton or gauze swabs soaked in baby lotion, oil or milk (they will cost you about the same amount).

After the bath, wrap the baby well in a large terry towel; It’s especially convenient if the towel has a special hood for your head. The main thing is that the baby’s arms and legs fit entirely into the towel.

When purchasing a bath thermometer, pay attention not so much to its shape as to the scale: determining the temperature should not cause the slightest difficulty for parents. Remember also to be safe: use only thermometers specifically designed for baths.

For the delicate hair of a newborn, the best option is not a comb, but a special brush - preferably made of natural bristles.

When purchasing nail scissors for a baby, do not forget that they must have rounded edges.

When choosing a pacifier for a newborn, consider quality first. It is best to give preference to well-known manufacturers who have proven themselves in the children's goods market. The safety of the material from which the pacifier is made should not raise doubts among parents. The second criterion when purchasing is the age of the child. (Conscientious manufacturers always indicate it on the packaging.) Now there are so-called “night” nipples; They differ from the “daytime” ones by a glow-in-the-dark ring. This way, mom won't have to turn on the light at night looking for her pacifier. The “choice” of the shape of the pacifier remains up to the child: experience shows that often children, almost from birth, give a strong preference to one or another type of pacifier - for mysterious reasons known only to them. Therefore, buy at least two different pacifiers: it is possible that your child will “accept” only one of them (however, it may happen that the baby will completely refuse the pacifier, but it is impossible to predict this in advance). As for the material, silicone and latex are currently widespread. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages, so the “decisive word” still belongs to the baby.

Now everyone already knows that hanging a pacifier (or anything else) around a child’s neck is dangerous. The function of the “rope” is successfully performed by a special device with a clamp. At one end it is attached to the baby's clothes, at the other - to the pacifier. Mom can replace such a pacifier even with one hand.

Some manufacturers produce pacifiers with a protective cap attached to them. It is very comfortable. For a pacifier without a cap, you must purchase a box.

Even if the mother intends to breastfeed her baby only until six months, purchasing some feeding items cannot be avoided. You will definitely need a spoon (for example, to give medicine). And it will be better if it is not an ordinary teaspoon, but a special spoon for infants. Now they are made from silicone, plastic, special rubber, etc. The main thing is that they are suitable in size for a small mouth and do not injure the gums of the baby.

Don't forget to stock up on bibs - the so-called "bibs".

Shortly before birth to the expectant mother It will be necessary to choose a nursing bra for yourself. It differs from the usual one in having unfastened cups. Do not purchase it in advance, as the breast size of a nursing mother is different from her breast size at the beginning of pregnancy. Silicone breast pads fall into the category of things that, as they say, would be better off not being used. But if the mother has cracked nipples and the baby needs to be fed, breast shields will help reduce the pain. To heal cracks, you can use sea buckthorn oil or rosehip oil, which, however, must be thoroughly washed off before feeding. Or Bepanten cream, which does not need to be washed off. It is best to contact a consultant breastfeeding to learn proper placement and grip. If the grip is correct, there should be no pain.

The need for a breast pump will be determined after you start breastfeeding. Accordingly, it’s probably not worth purchasing it in advance. There are a lot of women who have never pumped while breastfeeding, but no fewer women believe that a breast pump helped them save time and effort.

In a specialized store, a young mother will be helped to choose the right postpartum bandage and a remedy for stretch marks (however, nothing can replace gymnastics!).

A woman will need sanitary pads during the first period after childbirth. It is best to stock up on the most hygroscopic ones for the first days - and, as necessary, replenish their supply depending on changing requirements for the degree of protection.

When choosing a laundry detergent, keep in mind that there are washing powders for washing clothes of newborns, suitable for use in washing machine. It is good to pre-soap heavy stains (traces of feces, etc.) with bile-based soap.

A bucket with a lid can be used both as a “garbage bin” for disposable diapers and as a container for soaking diapers and gauze diapers.

While awake at night, the young mother will need a night light (a table lamp can also play its role, if necessary).

If the family budget allows, then electronic scales can be very useful. Modern models of scales “remember” the result of the last weighing and can immediately show weight gain, which is very convenient when breastfeeding. Mom can easily find out how much milk the baby sucked in one feeding. If you don’t have a scale at home, remember that your child will definitely be weighed during a monthly check-up with a pediatrician (you can save on purchasing scales if your child has no health or appetite problems).

From birth, a stroller will become your baby’s personal transport and, to a large extent, habitat for a long time, so if possible, you should not skimp on it. First, decide whether you will buy a stroller designed exclusively for a newborn, or just buy one “for growth.” If you want a stroller that will “grow” with your baby, buy either a transforming stroller that can easily transform from “lying” to “sitting” and back, or a universal “two-in-one” stroller, where a closed basket for a newborn can be time to remove and replace it with the stroller seat. This will cost less than buying two strollers, but purchasing a carrycot and a stroller separately has a number of advantages. Firstly, you need to take into account that a cradle stroller for a newborn is much safer than a transformable stroller - it is taller, has hard sides, and is much more stable. Secondly, you can sell the stroller for a newborn over time (they usually remain in good condition, since they are usually used for no more than 8-9 months). Thirdly, the majority strollers much lighter than “transformers” and “station wagons”; they fold compactly; Many models have flip-over handles and floating wheels. If your house has a small elevator or no elevator at all, then perhaps the last argument will be decisive.

Along with the stroller, you can also purchase an envelope of the same color (usually it is included in the kit or offered when purchasing the stroller). But if funds allow, also invest in a winter envelope from natural fur. No matter what month your baby is born, he will spend at least one winter sleeping in a stroller. This “all-weather” envelope will save you from extra layers of clothing and piles of blankets.

As for a raincoat for a stroller, the need for it depends on the properties of the material with which the stroller is covered. Many imported strollers do not need raincoats, because... impregnated with a special water-repellent composition.

Sometimes you can purchase a special (very convenient) umbrella for the stroller. Such an umbrella can not only protect from the sun's rays, but also serve as an additional barrier to raindrops flying under the hood of the stroller.

When choosing a kangaroo backpack, you should give preference to a model with a high back (to support the head), which offers two options for carrying the child: facing you or away from you. The backpack can be successfully replaced with a special sling for carrying a child. This is an improved version of the scarf, equipped with bolsters and safety fastenings. This device is designed to be worn by a child from birth, although some orthopedists recommend using it only from 6 months. Wearing options change as your baby grows.

If you have a car, then you cannot do without a child car seat. Firstly, a car seat is about the child’s safety, and as you know, they don’t skimp on safety. Secondly, some modifications of car seats can be used as a portable basket when visiting a clinic, going on a visit, and even at home (meaning chairs designed for little ones and equipped with a handle in the middle).

When choosing a blanket, be sure to consider the size of the crib and the temperature in the apartment. It may be enough to purchase a thin woolen blanket as a warm one, rather than a wadded or quilted one. For a lightweight one, you can buy an elegant cotton blanket that does not require a duvet cover, and to replace it with a mesh blanket, under which the child will not suffocate, even if it slides down his nose. True, such blankets are quite expensive, and they are not found in all stores. A child under three years of age, as a rule, does not need a pillow.

When choosing diapers, pay attention to the colors. Don't get carried away with too colorful a pattern. The number of diapers you need depends on whether you use disposable diapers.

You shouldn’t buy a lot of disposable diapers at once. Firstly, babies in the first month grow very quickly. And secondly, it is not known which diapers will suit your baby. You may have to proceed through trial and error.

When purchasing clothes, consider the rapid growth rates of infants. For example, having bought one thin overalls for a newborn, buy a second one for three months. It should be borne in mind here that some manufacturers indicate on the label the age period (for example, 0-3 months) or (less often) the exact age (1 month); others – approximate (62-68 cm) or exact height (56 cm). We highly recommend: when buying clothes for a child of the first year of life, in case of any doubt, lean to the side bigger size, especially in the first six months. Calico undershirts are now rarely used; they are successfully replaced by knitted ones with a button or even thin blouses. It is especially convenient to put a child to sleep in a “bodysuit” at night - no folds will bother him. It is better to buy rompers and overalls with “unfastening legs”. Children really do not like to change clothes, and in such clothes you can change the diaper without disturbing the child. When buying clothes for your baby, be sure to think about how comfortable it will be for your child to lie in it. Many items have a clasp at the back. See if buttons or other “accessories” will irritate your baby’s delicate back. It is better to purchase only cotton hats or bonnets. When choosing a hat and overalls for the outdoors, consider the season. If your child was born in winter, it is convenient to purchase overalls for a year (approximately size 80). In the first winter, it can be used as an envelope (with the sleeves and trousers turned up), and in the second the baby will already walk in it (or sit in a stroller). Well, “summer” children will have to buy a light overall for the street “without reserve”: next season it will be too small in any case.

Changing table - definitely useful thing. Typically, changing tables are sold in the form of small chests of drawers, where a bath is located under the changing board. But if you don’t have too much space in your apartment, then you can only purchase a changing board that is placed on top of the crib (sometimes they are immediately offered when purchasing a crib). However, you can always change clothes or swaddle the baby on the table or on your bed, although this is less convenient.

Many pediatricians recommend teaching children to swim, and simply bathing them in a large bathtub. But even if you belong to the “advanced” part of the parents who believe that their child should learn to swim before walking, it’s a good idea to purchase a baby bathtub - at least for use during the shutdown period hot water or at the dacha.

A “baby monitor” is a device that allows you to hear at a distance (up to several tens of meters) what is happening in the room where the child is. Such a “nanny” can make your life much easier. It consists of two parts: transmitting (installed next to the baby) and receiving (located next to the adult). Using a baby monitor, you can safely wash dishes, do laundry, watch TV and not be afraid of not hearing your child. There are different modifications of this wonderful device. For example, a mother can respond to a child (i.e., the receiving device can become a transmitting device). In some models, the adult portion can be removed from the charging cup and carried with you. This is very convenient, say, for a summer house, or just when moving around the apartment.

It is very interesting for a child to acquire his first toys (but not his first ones either). On the packaging of most toys for little ones they indicate what age they are intended for. It is better to give preference to well-known manufacturing companies. Such toys are more expensive, but they are of high quality and equipped with all the necessary certificates.
