Therefore, amigurumi, saturated with positive energy and warmth, turn out to be original and retain the character of the author. Knitting amigurumi― a fascinating process for both children and adults, because what adds interest is that the result should be a product that can be played with. Moreover, amigurumi is not only a toy, but also fashionable decor children's room interior. Therefore, this type of needlework is relevant not only in the field of creativity, but also in the world of interior design. But few people know what amigurumi is, how to choose the right tool and what materials to use. We can tell you!

What is amigurumi?

Amigurumi is a type of needlework that came to us from Japan. These are most often cute knitted animals in the form of bunnies, bear cubs, cats, etc., as well as fantasy people or creatures. All of them are endowed with human characteristics.

There are a few distinctive features amigurumi:

  • The size of the toy should not exceed 40 cm, since their miniature size is what makes them so attractive and cute;
  • Human facial features that carry a positive message;
  • Disproportion of body parts: the head of an amigurumi is always larger than the body, and the limbs are smaller.

What tools and materials should I take to create a toy?

It is better to choose a hook or knitting needles of a size slightly smaller than the thread of yarn, so that the fabric is quite dense and the filler cannot get out through the gaps, but not so much that it is impossible to stick a needle when sewing parts of the body. But increasingly, a hook is used to make amigurumi.

Any yarn is suitable for amigurumi, but you need to start from the result you want to get.

Most often, acrylic yarn is used for knitting amigurumi.. The toys hold their shape well, they are soft and smooth to the touch. And a lot of choice color solutions allows any craftswoman to find the color that she likes best.

If we consider cotton yarn, then it is suitable for those who like neatness, since the threads are quite dense and rigid, which allows them to obtain even rows as a result. Therefore, the toy turns out to be reliable and easy to use.

Velor and plush yarn is also used to create amigurumi; it feels like a towel or robe to the touch. The fibers are tightly connected to each other and no gaps are visible, but this yarn is not suitable for beginners, since during work the loops are lost from sight and you have to knit blindly, relying on intuition, that is, on experience. But as a result, the toy comes out fluffy and soft.

It is better not to use wool yarn for knitting toys, because you may be allergic to it, and the finished product can be very itchy. Svetlana Bolotova recommends Alize Cotton Gold and YarnArt Jeans yarn.

“In my opinion, these types of yarn are simply ideal for knitting toys, because... they do not contain wool and it does not feel prickly to the touch, but rather velvety. Toys knitted from this yarn look very aesthetically pleasing.”

What filling and decorations are suitable for amigurumi?

It is better to use padding polyester, holofiber and padding polyester as filler. They allow you to stuff the toy evenlyand achieve perfect rigidity. Many people add glass balls and beads to the filler to make the amigurumi heavier.Cereals can also be used as a filler., but Svetlana Bolotova advises not to do this, because it will be difficult to wash a toy stuffed with cereal.

To create eyes, beads or buttons of different sizes are used; you can also take pieces of felt, leather or fabric. For the nose, use a button or the same leather. If antennae are needed, then to make them it is better to take fishing line, wire or thread, which needs to be rubbed with wax. Butif you are knitting a toy for a child under three years old, then it is better to embroider the eyes and nose, since the baby will touch everything with his hands and taste it, and the buttons may come off and get into the mouth.

Pattern for knitting a toy "Little Bear"

Are in great demand and attention knitted bear cubs. This is a kind of symbol of comfort, kindness and gentleness. Therefore, toys in the form of bears are the most popular.

Craftswoman Svetlana Bolotova has been knitting for quite a long time, or rather since her school days. But I became interested in knitting toys six years ago. Throughout the entire duration of the schemechange, improve and supplement. Try knitting a bear cub according to Svetlana’s original pattern.

Or maybe we'll knit a pig or a pig?

For such a pig you will need: the remains of pink threads - acrylic, a hook, scissors, beads - 2 pieces, black threads for the eyebrows, the remains of felt for the snout, cotton wool or filler for stuffing and 1 free evening.

A pig is the same principle of knitting in the round, with the only difference being that in the place where the tail is we will decrease the loops and fill the pig itself with filler.

    Knitting principle:

How to knit a smiley face, a pop-eyed one?

We will need: yarn pink, black, green and white flowers, hook, needle, scissors.

We make a sliding loop and 1 air loop.

    1. 6 single crochets into a slip stitch and tighten. Insert the hook into the 1st loop and knit connecting stitches.
    2. In each loop we knit 2 sc (single crochet) 12 loops. We close the knitting with a connecting stitch, VP (air loop) lifting.
    3. We increase through 1 loop. 1СБН, 2СБН... repeat until the end of the row of 18 loops. Connecting loop, lifting loop.
    4. Increase through 2 loops, 1СБН, 1СБН, 2СБН... 24 loops. Connecting loop, VP. We knit tightly so that the stuffing is not visible.
    5. Through 3 loops. 1СБН, 2СБН, 3СБН. 30 loops. We alternate the increments for a uniform circle.
    6. Through 4 loops. 36.
    7. After 5 loops. 40 loops.
    8. We make a pancake - the desired size of the ball.
    9. Without increments we knit 6-7 rows in a circle. Insert a thread where you start knitting to track the required number of rows.
    10. Form a ball. We begin decreasing the loops in the same way as we did the increases, i.e. from 5 loops to 1.
    11. 1VP, 5СБН, 1СБН from 2 loops; repeat until the end of the row, connecting loop.
    12. 1VP, 4СБН, 1СБН from 2 loops; repeat until the end of the row, connecting loop.
    13. Fill the ball with padding polyester; if you have it in skeins, then cut it into pieces. Distribute evenly throughout the ball. Maintain the ball shape.
    14. 1VP, 3СБН, 1СБН from 2 loops; repeat until the end of the row, connecting loop.
    15. 1VP, 2СБН, 1СБН from 2 loops; repeat until the end of the row, connecting loop.
    16. 1VP, 1СБН, 1СБН from 2 loops; repeat until the end of the row, connecting loop.
    17. Continue knitting and close the knitting by cutting off the end and pulling it into the loop. The ball base is ready. Hide the thread inside by crocheting through the nearest loops.
    18. We knit the eyes in the same way, circles, as the basis for a pancake.
    19. Sew on the eyes and embroider the mouth.

  • Seals
  • What can you achieve if you use all the tips and tutorials?

With time and the acquisition of knitting skills, the mushroom will grow into a clearing with flowers, mushrooms, and hedgehogs.

Video about the game hedgehog in the clearing, what beneficial features in addition to toys, your child will easily develop

If desired, you can knit, for example, a chipmunk, as in this video.

Other options for toys are: acorn, animal rattle toys (cat, dog, chicken, bee).

How to turn an ordinary toy into an educational one?

    1. Come up with a plot and action. For example, a hedgehog or a chipmunk collects mushrooms and eats them.
    2. The flowers in the meadow can be all the colors of the rainbow, so you and your child can learn counting and colors.
    3. Place 10 flowers and 10 mushrooms in a clearing, and you will get a count of up to 20.
    4. Sizes from large to small, largest and smallest.
    5. While playing with the baby, the bee sits on different colors to collect nectar, name the colors of the flowers.
    6. One clearing, but hundreds of lessons. You can ask your child: Which fungus is the largest, the smallest? Ask them to arrange the mushrooms in order of growth from small to large.
    7. Such a clearing will become the basis for all other fairy tales - games. It is collapsible, then placing trees on different times year we knit leaves of different colors, flowers, tree fruits. With the arrival of autumn or summer, we replace the flowers in the meadow with berries.
    8. Winter. When, according to the fairy tale, winter has come to you, we exchange the mushrooms for a snowman or a Christmas tree. You can also add Santa Claus, Snow Maiden, Snowman, and gifts under the tree to the clearing.
    9. Animals: bunnies, foxes, wolf, bear, hedgehog, frog, mouse. Heroes of fairy tales: Kolobok, grandfather, grandmother, granddaughter.

What loops should you know how to knit?

Often the descriptions have loops written at the very beginning. They are designated by abbreviations.

The needlewomen show in the video what and how to knit, but for the maximum understanding and to make it easy to repeat, we recommend looking at each loop option separately if you couldn’t figure it out even when watching slowly. Repeat knitting only those loops that you need.

In most patterns and descriptions you will need to learn how to knit:

VP, RLS, SS, SSN, increases, decreases.

    • VP - air loops
    • RLS - single crochet
    • СС – connecting post
    • Dc - double crochet
    • Increases are knitting in 1 loop 2.
    • Decrements are 2 loops we knit 1.

How and when can you start crocheting toys?

The easiest thing: flowers, mushrooms, acorns, leaves, balls, heroes to put on your fingers, rattle toys with eggs from Kinder Surprises.

If you want to knit something, but don't know what it will look like or how to knit it, start by looking for pictures and video tutorials.

We analyze what parts the toy consists of, find similar descriptions and diagrams.

This way you will learn how to start knitting and what parts you need. If you are lucky and there is also a video tutorial, then the toy is almost ready.

What are the best toys to knit for kids?

For very small children, fully knitted toys without sewn parts are suitable. We recommend embroidering the eyes and nose with thread.

Choose cotton threads; they are not bright colors, but natural. When the child chews or soaks them, nothing will bite off.

You already have a selection of ideas and master classes with photos and videos; all you have to do is choose the toy you like and start knitting.

We wish you good luck and will be happy to answer all your questions about how to crochet a toy for beginners, perhaps the easiest thing for you was another creature, share your photo with us finished work, we will be happy to publish it on Kayu’s website.

Products self made, made from high-quality material, can bring a lot of joy to children and adults, because they contain not only the author’s idea, but also the love and warmth of their hands. You can create a unique toy with crochet or knitting, decorating it with various accessories made of fabric or felt. To do this you will need some materials and free time.

    Necessary materials and yarn

Even a novice needlewoman, thanks to master classes by craftsmen, can make a beautiful thing on her own. Craftsmen often use in their work different types yarn and fabric with prints to make the item even more beautiful and original. A handmade gift can bring a lot of positive and pleasant emotions and give kids smiles.

A lot depends on the threads you choose: the type of toy, size, density and softness, fluffiness. Therefore, the yarn must be chosen carefully. If a needlewoman takes timid steps in a new handmade technique and this will be her first product, then it is better to refuse complex textured yarn in terms of work and give preference to smooth and pleasant to the touch cotton threads. They do not stretch and are combined with other materials.

The thickness may vary, depending on the parameters of the toy itself. If you want to get a large doll, then you need to buy thick threads, if the product is curly and small , then you can find thinner threads.

By the way, it is better to use a hook one number less than what will be offered for the process. The tighter the knitting, the better for the work itself. Then the body of the toy will keep its given shape well and will not lose its appearance after use. Tight knitting is also important so that the filler does not show through and cannot be removed through the loops.

Synthetic down, foam rubber or holofiber are used as fillers for soft toys. The latter option can be found at any craft store and is inexpensive.

A needle for sewing the material is required; some elements of the toy cannot be tied to the product; they must be sewn tightly. The use of a needle requires items, clothing, and accessories.

Choosing a pattern and knitting rules
